Borough Man of The Match : Tommy Heffernan

Borough chalked up a win in their final game of the season, which they needed to retain any chance in the Championship race, but local rivals Hamworthy United made them work before the Hornets took control in the second period.

Tommy Heffernan set Borough off to the perfect start after only 3 minutes when he converted a Dan Herrington corner with a bullet header to register his first goal for the club. Following a quiet 10 minute spell Borough scored their second when Kieron Wall knocked a perfect pass into the path of Scott Smith on the right wing, who got past one defender before pulling the ball back for Wall to unleash a low shot past the keeper.

Further chances were created by Smith and Dan Cockwell as Borough pushed forward, but the visitors pattern was affected when first Smith and then Pete Morrell had to be replaced after picking up injuries, the latter sustaining ligament damage to his already troubled left knee.

Hamworthy sensed a chance to get back in the game, and after Sean Hebdon did well to clear one attack, the Hammers pulled a goal back on 36 minutes, with a free kick which went in of the post, after Tony Diaz had been penalised for a foul in front of goal.

The home side pushed forward looking for an equaliser, but deep in first half injury time Borough scored their all important third after a Heffernan cross was only cleared as far as Herrington at the edge of the area, who curled his shot over the packed defence and into the top right hand corner of the net.

HT 3-1

Borough effectively made the game save inside the first 10 minutes of the second period when a free kick into the area alluded Alan Fooks, but Wall was on hand at the far post to blast the ball home. Hamworthy made a number of substitutions, which seemed to lift their game again, and they pulled a goal back on 65 minutes with a well-taken header from a corner.

The game opened up as both sides looked to push forward, but it was Borough who scored the final goal with just over 15 minutes remaining when Heffernan launched a long free kick from the right touchline and Wall rose in the are to flick the ball on, and it landed in the path of Herrington who made no mistake with his finish.
