Winston Buckfield - Superb defensive display |
Holt United (1)2, Poole Borough (2)3 Dorset County League Division 1 Wednesday 30th August 2000 Scorers : Fooks
15, 79; Herrington 24. Borough fully deserved 3 points after a battling display which broke the home teams 2 season unbeaten league record. Holt opened the scoring after 7 minutes, but Borough levelled 8 minutes later, when Alan Fooks jinked into the box and unleashed a drive, which the defender on the line could only help into the net. On 24 minutes Scott Smith received the ball outside the area and Fooks intelligently left his diagonal pass for Dan Herrington, who stole in from the left and buried his shot past the keeper. Further chances were rare as both defences did well to stifle any attacks and the game was spoilt by fouls, Holt players notching up 4 bookings in the process. On 40 minutes the Holt keeper had to be replaced following more than 10 minutes of treatment after he want down under a challenge from Winston Buckfield. Just before the break Holt could have gone level but a shot from outside the box cannoned off the post. HT 1-2 The second half continued like the first with some bad challenges going unpunished by the referee. Herrington had two shots in quick succession, the first saved by the stand in keeper and the second narrowly over the bar. Pete Morrell and Winston Buckfield were outstanding in defence and repelled anything thrown at them, but Borough too were unable to carve out an opening until on 79 minutes a ball was knocked in to the area from the left, and after Smith saw his goal attempt blocked he knocked the rebound into the patch of Fooks, who made no mistake with his shot. Holt then decided to focus on the physical side of their game and there were some disgraceful scenes as the Referee lost control as the light rapidly faded. Scott Smith was shoulder charged over the goal line as he brought the ball in from the wing, and it was from this challenge that Holt took the ball up the other end and pulled a goal back with 5 minutes remaining. Before the final whistle there were further unsavoury actions from Holt, as they saw their record slip away, the worst being when Chris Morgan was intentionally stamped on after being brought down, but it takes two teams to start a brawl and the Borough players did an excellent job in not allowing themselves to be provoked as they held out for victory.
