Dorset County League Division 1
20th January 2001

Scorers : Dan Herrington 26.
Borough Man of The Match : Dan Herrington

A crowd of over 120 witnessed a hard fought encounter between Borough and Holt United as the top two sides in Dorset Division 1 battled out a 1-1 draw at Upton Rec.

The first 20 minutes were even, Gary Fooks had a shot headed off the line after 5 minutes, and Tony White had to do the same to deny Holt. Borough broke the deadlock on 26 minutes when Dan Herrington ran on to a perfectly weighted through ball from Pete Morrell and took the ball round the keeper before converting.

Holt attacked from the restart and were unfortunate to hit the post as Borough desperately tried to clear a goal mouth scramble. Alex Gunn came close after taking the ball past 2 players on the goal line, but just before half time the Andy Gunn was called on to make 2 good saves, the first low down by his right hand post and the second tipping a free kick onto the bar.

HT 1-0

Borough opened the second half the stronger and the Holt keeper had to make a desperate clearance from a Chris Morgan cross. Sean Hebdon also went close for Borough as his shot from a corner struck a Holt defender and his subsequent attempt from the rebound was headed off the line.

As the half progressed, Holt stepped up their attacks and had a number of shots off target before deservedly drawing level on 67 minutes, when Graham Trevett collected a short corner and his centre evaded a posse of players in the area before nestling into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

Both sides now pushed forward looking for the winner, Alan Fooks got past his marker on 72 minutes but shot just past the post whilst at the other end Dan Cockwell had to make a last ditch tackle to deny a Holt forward.

Inside the last five minutes Fooks saw another shot pass narrowly past the post and also collected a Gunn cross but his turn and shot went just over the bar. Andy Coles was sent off in the last minute for his second bookable offence, but it was probably the home team who were happier with the result which maintained the 4 point gap between the two sides.

Poole Borough : Andy Gunn, Gary Fooks (Dan Cockwell 70), Tony White, Pete Morrell, Sean Hebdon, Andy Coles, Alex Gunn, Dan Herrington, Scott Smith, Alan Fooks, Chris Morgan (Dave Holdroyd 73).
