Poole Borough (0)1, Lytchett Red Triangle (0)0. Dorset County League Division 1 16th September 2000 Scorer : Andy
Coles 47. A crowd of over 100 were at Upton Rec. to see Borough collect their fifth straight win of the season to stay top of Division 1, but although dominating proceedings their failure to convert numerous chances kept Lytchett in the hunt for a share of the points to the end of the game. Lytchett looked much stronger defensively from the side beaten 6-0 back in April and both Scott Smith and Alex Gunn saw shots blocked before Alan Fooks got free of his marker but shot at the keeper. The Lytchett keeper did well after 15 minutes when he tipped over a Shaun Hebdon header from a corner, but when he was beaten 5 minutes later after Fooks latched onto a long drop kick from Andy Gunn, the ball came back off the underside of the bar. Borough's defence, with Tony White and Pete Morrell outstanding, dealt easily with Lytchett's attacks and they were left to attempt long-range efforts, which Andy Gunn fielded with little problem. After almost continuous pressure, Borough were awarded a penalty following a goal mouth scramble when a defender was adjudged to have handled, but Alex Gunn's spot kick was saved well to the keepers right. Before the break Smith, Fooks and Dan Herrington all had chances but were off target HT 0-0 It took just 2 minutes of the second half for Borough to finally break the deadlock, when Smith's goal attempt was cleared only as far as Andy Coles on the edge of the area, and his shot found its way through a packed penalty box, and could only be parried by the keeper on its way into the net. With a further goal being enough to seal the game, Borough continued to pressure and a Fooks header hit the side netting whilst an Alex Gunn shot went just over the bar after some good approach work. Lytchett, however, began to sense they still had a chance, and after forcing their first corner of the half with 10 minutes to go began to push forward in numbers and in the final minute it took a superb Andy Gunn reaction save to deny the visitors a share of the points. Poole Borough : Andy Gunn, Morrell, Herrington (Cockwell 80), White, Hebdon, Holdroyd, Alex Gunn, Coles, Smith, Fooks, Morgan. Unused Subs : Ross Gulliver, Scott Arnold. |
