Okeford United (1) 3, Poole Borough (2) 3. Dorset County League Division 1 18th April 2001 Scorers : Tony Diaz 2, 62;
Chris Morgan 25 Borough dominated this game for long periods but failed to make the most of their chances and despite taking a 3-1 lead in the second half they allowed their relegation-threatened opponents to share the points. Playing down the slope Borough took the lead on 2 minutes when Tony Diaz latched onto a ball cleared from a corner and hit a shot into the top corner. Further pressure followed and the home keeper was forced to tip the ball over the bar from a Dan Herrington shot. Diaz was then held back but the referee waved away appeals for a penalty. Borough keeper Andy Gunn had his first touch of the ball after 15 minutes when he fielded a long range shot and then at the other end Scott Smith was put through by Alan Fooks but he shot straight at the keeper. Okeford equalised on 18 minutes with their only real shot of the first half when Pike shot past the advancing Gunn. Borough had chances to regain the lead before Pete Morrell, who was marshalling his defence well, hit a long cross-field ball into the path of Chris Morgan, who held off his marker to score after 25 minutes. There was no further score in the first half despite Borough creating numerous openings. HT 2-1 Okeford pushed forward more in the second half and Andy Gunn was forced to save when the home side broke quickly. Diaz and Smith both had shots saved and on 60 minutes Coles replaced Morgan. Two minutes later Diaz increased Borough's lead when he hit a first-time low drive from 18 yards that gave the keeper no chance. Okeford, however, refused to be beaten and within 5 minutes had reduced the arrears when Pike was left unmarked at the far post and he stooped to head in a low cross from the right. The home team now sensed an upset and with 5 minutes to go Diaz conceeded a foul and was booked. The resulting free-kick was not cleared and Robertson hit the equaliser from close range. Okeford now defended
desperately and Borough nearly scored a winner when a
corner resulted in a scramble but the ball was cleared
off the line. At the final whistle Okeford celebrated a
point which may help to keep them up, whilst Borough must
hope that other results will go their way to remain in
the hunt for the league title. Poole Borough : Andy Gunn, Sean Hebdon, Keiron Wall, Peter Morrell, Tom Heffernan, Scott Smith. Alex Gunn, Dan Herrington, Tony Diaz, Alan Fooks, Chris Morgan (Andy Coles 60). Unused Subs : Dan Cockwell, Matt Smith. |
