(0) 0, Poole Borough (3) 3. Dorset County League Division 1 10th March 2001 Scorers : Kieron Wall 1, 8;
Scott Smith 21. Striker Kieron Wall made an immediate impact on his debut for Borough, putting the Hornets into the lead after only 15 seconds when he latched onto a through ball from Alan Fooks to convert. Wall, a constant threat to the home defence, was on the scoresheet again inside 10 minutes as he met a Tony Diaz right wing cross at the near post and deftly steered the ball past the keeper. Alan Fooks was unfortunate not to increase the score soon after, when his cross was palmed into the air by the keeper and a defender on the line had to hack the ball clear. The Islanders created their first scoring attempt on 19 minutes and Andy Gunn did well to save low to his right from a well taken free kick. Borough looked to be set for a big score when Scott Smith bundled in a Fooks cross from the by-line on 21 minutes, but the complexion of the game changed when Borough keeper Andy Gunn left the field five minutes later with a dislocated shoulder to be replaced by captain Pete Morrell. Portland began to press creating some half chances towards the end of the first period, but they also had some defending to do, scrambling clear a Tommy Heffernan header from a corner. HT 3-0 Borough nearly got off to a dream start again after the interval, when an Andy Coles shot was deflected just past the post, but the home side had the best of the early exchanges following the break, with Tony Diaz having to execute a last ditch tackle in the area and Heffernan clearing the ball off the line, after Morrell made a rare error. As the second half progressed, Borough began to control the game more with Wall again combining well with his new team mates, but the best chance fell to Richard Hobbs on the half hour, whose shot was well saved by the home keeper, and Borough had to settle for the three first half goals whilst picking up their second clean sheet in a row. Borough : Andy Gunn (Andy Coles 28), Dan Cockwell, Tony White, Pete Morrell, Tommy Heffernan, Kieron Wall, Scott Smith, Dan Herrington (Chris Morgan 60), Tony Diaz, Alan Fooks, Richard Hobbs (Alex Gunn 79). |
