Borough Man of The Match : Tony White

Borough picked themselves up from their mid-week draw against Okeford United to provide an assured display and overcome a talented young Portland Reserve side.

The home side pressured from the kick-off, and Kieron Wall went close with a shot which went just over the bar before Scott Smith opened the scoring on 11 minutes when he ran on to a sideways pass from Alan Fooks on the edge of the area and rifled home his shot. Fooks increased the score within a minute after winning the battle with the last defender to control a through pass, before slotting the ball past the stricken keeper.

Portland created their first real scoring attempt, which flew narrowly wide, before on 22 minutes Pete Morrell sent a perfect pass into the path of Tony White, running into the area, who casually skipped past defender and keeper before tapping the ball over the line.

Borough were playing some excellent passing football, with Tommy Heffernan and Tony White particularly dangerous pushing forward on the flanks, so it as no surprise when Fooks scored his second 6 minutes before half time when he was first to the rebound after a Smith shot was blocked and duly converted for his 31st goal of the season. There was still time before the interval for Pete Morrell to unleash a thunderous shot which went inches over.

HT 4-0

Early in the second period Alex Gunn scored Borough's fifth with a far post header after White had got to the by-line and sent over a perfect cross.

At this point, Portland brought on veteran striker Pete Turrell and began to create some openings but Borough still dominated and went closest to increasing the score when Smith took the ball from inside his own half to the edge of the area before squaring to White whose shot came off the post.

The win ensured Borough retained the top spot and maintained the pressure on title rivals Holt.
