Scott Smith - Vital hat-trick |
Verwood Town (2)2-3, Poole Borough (0)2-4. (after extra time) Dorset Senior Cup - 1st Round 7th October 2000 Scorers : Scott Smith 75, 97, 120; Tony White 77 (pen). Borough showed great character to progress into the second round of the Senior Cup after being 2 goals down at half-time, against a Verwood side which played a lot better than their league position indicated. The first 25 minutes saw Borough in control but Verwood defended well, and restricted the visitors to just a couple of chances, a shot from Alan Fooks and a header just wide from Tony White. Against the run of play Verwood took the lead on 30 minutes when a poor defensive clearance was swiftly crossed into the Borough area and in a goal mouth scramble, Andy Gunn did well to save an initial shot but could do nothing to stop the rebound. Verwood continued to press and were rewarded on 42 minutes when Andy Gunn was beaten to the ball as he come out to collect a high free kick and it was knocked behind him into the path of a Verwood forward who headed in. HT 0-2 Borough came out in the second half and dominated the game. Within minutes of the restart Dave Holdroyd had come close with 2 headers, the first scrambled clear by the keeper and the second a deft flick from a corner which went just wide. Further chances were created, but it was only 15 minutes from time when Borough pulled a goal back as Scott Smith stole into the box to head home a corner whipped in by Mark Thomas. Two minutes later Borough were level as a Verwood player was adjudged to have handled in the area and Tony White blasted in the Penalty kick. Borough now looked for the winner and Pete Morrell drove a low shot from outside the box, which came off the post. Just before full time Smith got past the defence but put his shot over the bar. FT 2-2 With Borough continuing to push forward, it was no surprise that they took the lead for the first time on 97 minutes when Smith hammered in the rebound after an Andy Coles shot was blocked. Smith was close again as he just failed to connect to an Alex Gunn cross but Andy Gunn was also tested, and he did well to punch clear as the ball flew around the area. Verwood now pushed forward for the equaliser and it came with 12 minutes to go as a through ball was skilfully controlled with the chest before being struck past Gunn. Both sides created further chances, but a minute into injury time Alex Gunn won the ball on the right and pushed it wide to Fooks whose perfect low cross was met by Smith to slot it past the keeper.
