Pete Morrell- Excellent Game |
Poole Borough (2)2, Weymouth United (0)0. Dorset County League Division 1 2nd September 2000 Scorers : Alex
Gunn 6, Alan Fooks 40. A depleted Borough side took the field at new home venue Upton Rec against the team they pipped for runners-up spot last season. Borough were missing Scott Smith, Andy Coles and Winston Buckfield from last weeks game and Ross Gulliver was held up in traffic and did not arrive until midway through the first-half. Borough, with Paul Glenister and Mark Thomas making their debuts started strongly and Herrington had a shot tipped over the bar. From the resulting corner, Holdroyd headed on and Alex Gunn hooked the ball in from close range. Shortly afterwards a quickly taken free-kick by Pete Morrell hit the bar. With a strong wind behind them Borough created numerous openings and Fooks, Herrington and Morgan all went close to increasing the lead. Weymouth were reduced to testing Borough keeper Andy Gunn with a couple of long free-kicks. The second goal finally came on 40 minutes when a deep cross came in from the right and Morgan did well to hook the ball back from the by-line for Fooks to crash the ball past the Weymouth keeper. As the first-half came to a close Cockwell made a good tackle on a Weymouth forward as he closed in on goal. HT 2-0 The second half was a scrappy affair. Weymouth never really troubled the home defence and Boroughs best chance came when Alex Gunn cut in from the right and hit a shot that the Weymouth keeper turned onto the post. Pete Morrell had an excellent game, marshalling his defence and hitting accurate long passes behind the Weymouth backs for the Borough forwards to run on to. Poole Borough : Andy Gunn, Dan Cockwell, Dan Herrington, Pete Morrell, Sean Hebdon, Dave Holdroyd, Paul Glenister, Mark Thomas, Alex Gunn, Alan Fooks, Chris Morgan. Unused Subs: Ross Gulliver, Paul Arnold. |
