After Extra Time
Dorset Senior Cup 3rd Round
19th December 2000

Scorer : Scott Smith 42
Borough Man of The Match : Pete Morrell

Borough once again bridged the gap between Dorset and Wessex League to take Wimborne all the way to the second period of extra time before finally bowing out of the Senior Cup.

Wimborne had the majority of the early possession in a half played mainly in midfield, with Borough's soaking up the pressure before breaking forward, the only early chance for Wimborne saw Andy Gunn parry a long range shot.

On 29 minutes Borough's first clear opportunity started with Chris Morgan holding the ball up well before switching to Alan Fooks who ran into enough space to unleash a shot which flew just wide of the post.

Alex Gunn caused problems whenever he ran at the defence and on 42 minutes he took the ball through the middle before slipping the perfect pass to Scott Smith on the edge of the area who rifled the ball past Staples.

Straight from the restart Wimborne pushed forward and Andy Gunn had to save at full stretch from a driven shot by Turner.

HT 1-0

The second period saw extensive pressure from Wimborne, but the Borough defence were equal to the challenge, executing a number of well timed clearances with Tony White and Pete Morrell showing all their experience to hold the line.

Wimborne's equaliser came on 67 minutes when the ball was cleared only as far as Turner, whose shot appeared to curve on its way onto the goal, wrong footing Andy Gunn on its way in.

As the half wore on Borough sustained further pressure, Gary Fooks had to execute a last ditch tackle and Andy Gunn a fine low save to keep the scores level.

In the final minutes Gunn again had to save well but at the other end Chris Morgan took the ball forward, but was unable to slip a pass through to an unmarked Alan Fooks on the right before he was dispossessed.

Borough tired in extra time, but were still kept the opposition at bay with some excellent defending in the area, and Andy Gunn made four superb saves to keep Borough in the tie.

With 5 minutes remaining Borough broke and after an interchange with Smith, Alan Fooks was just beaten to the ball in the area as he looked to unleash a shot, but 2 minutes from time Wimborne had the final say when from a corner, a shot went through a forward's legs and into the net with the unsighted Gunn given no chance.

After holding Wimborme over two games it was a cruel blow for Borough, but the again did themselves, the club and the Dorset League proud in this competition.
