Borough overcame difficult blustery conditions, and the physical tactics of the visitors to progress in the Dorset League Cup as they made amends for their defeat at Beaminster last weekend with a 4-1 at Turlin Moor. Dan Burton was delayed getting to the game, so with no other keeper eligible, Henry Simpson stood in between the sticks.

The home side made the best possible start after only two minutes when Alan Fooks was pushed off the ball in the area and Jimmy Edwards converted the resulting penalty. Simpson was called into action immediately after as he tipped a shot over the bar and both sides had chances further which went wide. Beaminster drew level mid-way through the half when a deep corner held up in the wind and provided an easy opportunity for a visiting forward at the far post to bundle the ball over the line.

The home side struggled to create chances in the remainder of the first period as the strong wind blowing across the pitch nullified Borough's passing play and the goal attempts were reduced to long range efforts, the best from Matt Bircumshaw free kick, which went just over the bar.

HT 1-1

Borough stepped up their game in the second period as they began to adapt to the conditions. Scott Smith sent Alan Fooks through early on, but the shot went wide and Dan Herrington saw a shot saved low down by the near post. Borough defended superbly and the their only problems came from a series of vicious tackles which the referee failed to punish.

Further chances fell to Bircumshaw and Alan Fooks before Sean Hebdon snatched the lead back 20 minutes from time with a thumping header from a Dan Herrington corner. Two minutes later Alex Gunn sent a superb chip over the defence into the path of Bircumshaw whose shot was too high.

The result was wrapped up on 75 minutes when Alex Gunn slipped a pass into the path of Smith, who drew the keeper before slotting home. Smith sent Alan Fooks through again, but the shot was blocked by the keeper. Lee Symes came off the bench and in the dying minutes scored his first goal for the Hornets with a superb lob over the keeper from wide on the left to take Borough into the second round and a game against Dorchester Sports or Gillingham Reserves.

Borough : Henry Simpson, Craig Shanley, Dan Herrington, Kieron Wall, Sean Hebdon, Jimmy Edwards, Alex Gunn, Matt Bircumshaw (Lee Symes 86), Scott Smith (Shaun Clarke 90), Alan Fooks, Gary Fooks (Andy Coles 77).
