Borough Man of The Match : Alex Gunn

Borough maintained their 100% record to remain top of Division 1 after cruising to their eighth successive win at home to Blandford United Reserves.

Battling against a strong wind in the first half the home side came close to opening the scoring in the first minute as a low cross fell to Alex Gunn on the right who saw his shot blocked. A further early opportunity fell to Alan Fooks who shot just wide.

Both sides created their best chances on 24 minutes as first a Blandford forward broke through after Kieron Wall slipped under pressure, but Dan Burton was quickly out of his goal to stop the shot. The ball was immediately sent forward to Dan Herrington on the left, whose centre was met by Scott Smith, but the resulting shot hit the bar.

With Herrington and Gunn beginning to operate well on either wing, Borough showed a better command of the conditions and Gunn sent over a far post cross which Herrington met with his head, but the keeper blocked with his legs. Further chances fell to Alan Fooks and Smith as Borough began to dominate.

On 42 minutes Borough took the lead as Smith ran onto a through all from Tommy Heffernan and took the ball past the keeper before tucking the ball away from an acute angle. Immediately after the kick-off, Blandford found themselves in more trouble as they went down to 10 men, with a player sent off for a second bookable offence.

HT 4-0

Borough came out in the second half and dominated, Smith had an immediate chance after running onto a Will Owen through ball and shot narrowly wide. The Blandford keeper made a series of saves to deny both Alan and Gary Fooks as the home side pushed forward in numbers. The second goal finally came for Borough on 68 minutes as the visitor’s keeper was unable to hold a blistering shot from Matt Bircumshaw and Alan Fooks ran in to bundle the ball home.

Fifteen minutes from time Borough got the third as Smith broke the offside trap and fed the ball to Matt Bircumshaw on the left who buried his shot into the far corner. Four minutes later Kieron Wall got on the score sheet, collecting the ball on the edge of the area before slipping past a defender and placing his shot just inside the far post.

Both Alan Fooks and Tommy Heffernan saw shots come off the bar as the home side continued to push for further goals, and Heffernan was rewarded with the last kick of the match as he beat the keeper with a shot from the edge of the box.
