Chickerell United (1) 2, Poole Borough (2) 3. Dorset Division 1 League Cup Final Saturday 11rd May 2002 Chickerell Scorers : Andy
Hall 35, Matt Dench 88. Poole Borough became the first side in six years to secure the Dorset League Division 1 double as they lifted the League cup to go with their Championship after a thrilling 3-2 victory against Chickerell United at the Cuthbury. Borough had a dream start as veteran striker Alan Fooks put them in the lead inside 10 minutes after he latched on to a through ball and rode a tackle before slotting the ball home. Chickerell appeared to be struggling to cope with Borough's forays down the slope but the Hornets couldn't make more of their early domination as shots from Scott Smith, Dan Herrington and Kieron Wall all flew over the bar. As the half progressed Chickerell began to show the form which took them to third place in the league and came close to equalising when their forward just failed to get a touch to a left wing cross with the goal as his mercy. Further chances for Borough came with a downward header from Kieron Wall which was blocked by the Chickerell keeper, and Smith saw a blistering shot cannon off the bar and goal line before being scrambled clear. On 35 minutes Chickerell equalised as Borough were unable to clear the ball out of defence and Andy Hall arrived at the edge of the area to blast in a shot which Borough keeper Dan Burton got a hand to, but could not keep out. Within three minutes Borough were back in front after Smith collected a low cross in the area from Alan Fooks before making space to squeeze a shot just inside the near post. HT 1-2 Chickerell looked more lively in the second half with the slope in their favour and the Borough defence looked under pressure as they conceded a number of free kicks around the edge of the area. Against the run of play however, Borough got the third and decisive goal when Herrington centred from the left and Gary Fooks was on hand to head the ball in. There was still time for Chickerell to mount a comeback and after Matt Dench latched on to a long throw to force the ball over the line with two minutes remaining, Borough fans had to endure some nervous moments before seeing their side lift the trophy for the second time in three years.
