Poole Borough (1) 1, Chickerell United (1) 1. Dorset County League Division 1 Saturday 19th January 2002 Borough Scorers : Matt
Bircumshaw 21. Following their first defeat of the season last weekend, Borough dropped their first home points at Turlin Moor as Chickerell United held them to a 1-1 draw. Borough were left to rue a missed penalty in the second half as their normally lethal strike force were limited by a resolute defensive display from the visitors. Chickerell had the best of the opening exchanges and went ahead after only 5 minutes when a visiting striker latched on to defensive mistake by Sean Hebdon and ran on to shoot past Dan Burton. Borough took some time to settle and the visitors spurned a further opportunity before Hebdon had to be replaced after aggravating his hamstring injury. Matt Bircumshaw levelled the score on 21 minutes, with a superbly struck volley from the edge of the area, after Scott Smith had done well to win the ball in the area before knocking the ball back to the midfielder. Smith headed just over the bar and Gary Fooks shot wide as Borough began to take control, but just before the break Kieron Wall and Craig Shanley were forced to make last ditch tackles to stop Chickerell turning round in front. HT 1-1 Craig Shanley came close immediately after the restart as he just failed to connect to a free-kick whipped into the box by Alan Fooks and the visiting keeper saved well from Wall. The penalty came 10 minutes after the restart after Alan Fooks was bundled over in the box, but after a delay as the referee dealt with encroachment in the area, Wall put the spot kick over the bar. Borough were reduced to 10 men shortly afterwards when Lee Symes was shown the red card for retaliation, but this seemed to spur the home side on, as Smith saw a shot kicked off the line and as the ball was returned into the area Wall's header was well saved by the keeper. Borough did got the ball in the net from a shot by Andy Coles, but it was disallowed for offside. With Chickerell packing their defence and attacking on the break, the home side were restricted to just two further chances from Alan Fooks and Bircumshaw with both shots going agonisingly wide. Borough: Dan Burton, Andy Coles, Paul Getley (Gunn 80), Kieron Wall, Craig Shanley (Ben Aldous 88), Sean Hebdon (Sean Clark 13), Lee Symes, Matt Bircumshaw, Scott Smith, Alan Fooks, Gary Fooks. |
