Poole Borough (2) 3, Dorchester United (0) 1. Dorset County League Division 1 Saturday 9th February Scorers : Alan Fooks 19;
Kieron Wall 27 (pen); Gary Fooks 60 (pen). Borough were made to replay this home fixture against second placed Dorchester United after playing an ineligible player during their win in October and were also forced to field only players signed before the previous game. Against these odds Borough produced a gutsy and virtually faultless performance to win a hard fought game and consolidate their lead at the top of the league. The home side had to soak up some early pressure and Dorchester had a penalty claim turned down before Alan Fooks put the home side in front on 19 minutes when he latched on to a through pass and coolly took the ball past the visiting keeper before tapping in. Borough were forced to defend in numbers and attack on the break, but came close to increasing the score on25 minutes when Scott Smith just failed to get any power to a header from an Alan Fooks cross. Borough, however, increased the score two minutes later after Kieron Wall was bundled over in the area as he challenged for a corner, and he stepped up himself to blast home the penalty. Dorchester pushed forward looking to get back in the game and Dan Burton preserved the two goal lead with three superb saves, first a reaction stop from a shot inside the box, the second at full stretch after a forward broke through and finally just before the break he parried away another attempt. HT 2-0 Dorchester broke through again just after the break, but Burton forced the forward wide and he shot against the side netting, whilst at the other end chances from Alan Fooks and Wall went narrowly over. The lead was increased on 60 minutes as Borough broke swiftly from defence and after a neat interchange between Alan and Gary Fooks, Gary was knocked over as he ran into the area and the midfielder converted the penalty himself. Borough settled into their passing game, and created the majority of chances but were unable to convert, whilst at the other end Burton was again forced to make a double save. Finally Dorchester pulled back a goal back from a direct free kick 5 minutes from time, and as the game opened up both Scott Smith and Alan Fooks had chances saved, and Burton made another save at full stretch to deny the visitors a late comeback. Borough : Dan Burton, Andy Coles, Dan Herrington, Kieron Wall, Lee Atkins, Craig Shanley, Alex Gunn, Matt Bircumshaw, Scott Smith, Alan Fooks, Gary Fooks. Unused subs: Dan Cockwell, Ben Aldous, Nigel Legg. |
