Borough Man of The Match : Dan Herrington

Borough were forced to field 16 year old reserve keeper Ed Thompson as a late replacement for Dan Burton after he went down with suspected appendicitis, in their match with local rivals Hamworthy United, but managed to extend their winning run to 10 games with a goal in each half. Jamie Wilson, was also given his debut in place of the unavailable Scott Smith.

The home side had the first chance in the 4th minute when Wall headed over from a Heffernan free-kick and then a minute later Herrington had a shot palmed away by Hall in the Hamworthy goal. Hamworthy’s first attempt on goal came after 8 minutes but Thompson comfortably held the shot. Borough were passing the ball well, but were unable to penetrate a determined Hamworthy defence until the 20th minute, when Herrington picked up a loose ball on the half-way line, ran forward and unleashed an unstoppable shot from 25 yards which flew into the top corner. Thompson was called into action again when he had to dive at the feet of a Hamworthy forward, but Borough were looking more likely to increase their lead. Alex Gunn had the best chance as the first half came to a close, when he headed just wide from a Heffernan free-kick.

The second-half saw Borough go straight back into the attack and in the first minute Bircumshaw’s shot went just over the bar and then Herrington had another run down the left, but his shot also just cleared the crossbar. Paul Gatley came on for Jamie Wilson and after his cross was headed away, Heffernan headed against the bar from the resultant corner. Gunn netted for Borough but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Thompson was a virtual spectator as Borough were camped in the Hamworthy half. Hamworthy managed to get the ball in the net from their only real attack of the second half in the 81st minute but this was also disallowed because of offside. Alan Fooks wrapped the game up a minute later when he ran at the defence and hammered a shot past Hall for his 99th career goal for Borough. Gary Fooks nearly added to the tally when he finished a flowing move but Hall tipped the ball over the bar. As the game entered the final minute Alan Fooks missed the chance to score his century of goals for Borough when his shot hit the post.
