Season Round-Up First Team Borough found themselves at a new ground for the third season, as they set up home at Turlin Moor Rec. after negotiations with the council secured the location as the clubs permanent base. For the second year in a row the team were favourites for the Division 1 title, but this time avoided the late slip-ups, which cost them the championship the previous season and lead from start to finish to claim the title. Borough opened their campaign in superb style, fielding an unchanged side for the first five games and creating a club record start with nine straight wins before being held to a draw against Weymouth United when the home side equalised with the last kick of the match. Borough also claimed their first Dorset Combination scalp in the Senior Cup with a 2-1 win against Sherborne Town, but went out at the next stage after a below par performance at Wimborne. The club had opened up a 5 point lead by the end of November, but disaster struck as irregularities with the signing of two players meant the immediate deduction of three points and a decision that the home win against title rivals Dorchester United would have to be replayed. With the news coming just before the away trip to Dorchester this could well have caused a dip in performance, but instead the team blitzed to a 4-0 half time lead before eventually winning 4-2 in a bruising encounter. Into January the team were still unbeaten in the league, but after 17 games came unstuck in the mud a Gillingham, surrendering a 2-0 lead to go down 3-2, and the following week Chickerell came away from Turlin Moor with a point in a 2-2 draw, which gave some encouragement to the chasing pack. This setback could well have been significant as in early February the rescheduled Dorchester United fixture was played and Borough faced an additional penalty with all players signed after the original game in October unable to play while the visitors were free to field their first choice side. Borough however produced an almost faultless performance, winning 3-1 to re-claim the points. Boroughs 100th goal came in the 6-0 win at Okeford but there was one further scare as Portland forced a draw at Turlin Moor, and with the fixture list dictating the return match the following week, Borough showed their quality by making amends with the win secured by two second half goals. A draw at Beaminster at the end of March would have sealed the title, but after the home side nicked a winner 10 minutes from time, Borough had to wait two weeks before lifting the championship in front of their home crowd with a convincing 4-0 win against former bogy side Weymouth United. With the league secure, Borough cruised into the final of the League Cup, making amends for earlier defeats by beating Gillingham and Beaminster on the way, but had to battle against a spirited Chickerell United side at Cuthbury to become the first side in six years to lift the Division 1 double. Reserves The Reserves season got off to the worst possible start with a draw and a defeat (1-5 to Cranbone) in their opening two home league matches. A run of four successive wins, including a 9-1 thrashing of Witchampton steadied the ship. Through the winter, games were sporadic due to postponements but another 3 wins and 3 draws saw the reserves challenge near the top. Highlight of these games was the 2-2 draw with then leaders Poole & Parkstone R.M in a game they could not afford to lose if their championship plans were to remain in their own hands. More wins followed including the 13-2 demolition of TJs Club where Darren Abrau scored 6.Approaching the run in, PBFC needed 10 pts from 12 to secure the title on goal difference. Knowing this they won the first three games so setting up the last match with Sturminster Newton needing 1 point and 90 minutes later Captain Jamie Townsend lifted the championship after a resounding 5-1 win. On the cup front, disappointment in the `Minor' cup where a semi final defeat 1-0 to Spa Hotel mined a good cup run after 3 good away wins in the previous rounds, at Alderholt, Mowers and AFC Haymoor. In the league cup, qualification from the group stages set up a 3-0 semi final win against Witchampton. The final was played at Okeford United's ground, with Cranborne Reserves the opposition and a good crowd saw the reserves run out comfortable 4-0 winners so emulating the first" teams double success from the previous week. Player of the year and Player's player awards went to Scoff Arnold with Lee Atkins ending the season as top goalscorer with 23 goals. |
