Poole Borough (1) 2, Sherborne Town (1) 1. Dorset Senior Cup Saturday 3rd November 2001 Scorers : Bircumshaw
35, Heffernan 90 (pen). Borough again showed their credentials against higher rated opposition as they overcame Combination League Sherborne Town in the 2nd round of the Dorset Senior Cup with a 2-1 victory at Turlin Moor, the winning goal coming after Tommy Heffernan converted a dramatic last minute penalty. The home side started the game on top and Heffernan came closest to opening the scoring with a header that whistled just past the post. It was Sherborne, however, who took the lead on 11 minutes following a defensive mix up, when a back pass from Kieron Wall alluded keeper Dan Burton and provided the visiting forward with simple a tap-in. Borough continued to dictate proceedings, and drew level 10 minutes from the break when Alex Gunn did superb work on the right wing to create space before sending over a cross to the far post and Matt Bircumshaw arrived on the line to force the ball over. HT 1-1 The second period continued like the first, with Borough creating the majority of chances, whilst Sherborne always looked dangerous on the break. With the threat of extra time imminent, the referee's assistant spotted an off the ball infringement against Heffernan in the penalty area and despite the visitors protests the referee pointed to the spot. Heffernan showed all his experience to coolly step up himself and execute a perfect spot kick, which put Borough into the next round with the chance to again face one of the counties top non-league sides. Borough: Dan Burton, Will Owen, Dan Herrington, Kieron Wall, Tommy Heffernan, Sean Hebdon (Craig Shanley 70), Alex Gunn, Matt Bircumshaw, Paul Gatley (Jamie Wilson 63), Alan Fooks, Gary Fooks. Unused Subs. Lawrie North. |
