Poole Borough (2) 8, Shaftesbury Reserves (1) 1. Dorset League Division 1 Wednesday 17th April Borough Scorers : Smith (2),
G. Fooks, Edwards, Gunn, Bircumshaw, Simpson, Clarke. Borough finished their league programme by beating Shaftesbury 8-1 and taking their league goals tally to 135 for the season. In only the second minute the Shaftesbury keeper did well to save a low Herrington shot, but 4 minutes later Gary Fooks ran with the ball from the half-way line and finished with a well-struck shot that the keeper got his hands to, but the ball looped over him and into the net. Shaftesbury thought they had equalised mid-way through the half , but after allowing an attacker to run on and round keeper Burton to score, the referee called play back for an offside decision. This spurred the visitors on and after 30 minutes they equalised when a cross from the left found an unmarked attacker in front of goal and he shot past Burton. Burton had to save again as Shaftesbury looked to take the lead but two minutes from a shortened 40-minute half, Jimmy Edwards picked up a loose ball and gave the keeper no chance with a shot from 25 yards that flew into the top corner. HT 2-1 Borough took control in the second-half and scored four quick goals to demoralise the visitors. Herrington crossed for Gunn to score after 4 minutes of the half and just after Smith scored two goals, his second a fine header from Gunn's cross. Bircumshaw then weaved through the defence before placing the ball wide of the keeper to make it 6-1 after only 12 minutes of the half had gone. Manager Pete Morrell then brought on Symes and Clarke for Smith and Alan Fooks and pushed defender Simpson forward. Simpson was looking to get his name on the scoresheet and after going close on a number of occasions was rewarded after 20 minutes when he drove a low shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the area. Substitute Clarke then scored his first goal for Borough to make the score 8-1 when he lashed the ball high into the net after good work by Wall. Keeper Dan Burton, who had little to do in the second-half, ran the length of the field to go up for a corner in the final minutes but had a wasted journey as the near-post corner failed to reach him. Borough - Burton, Edwards, Herrington, Wall, Simpson, Hebdon, Gunn, Bircumshaw, Smith (Symes 57), A. Fooks (Clarke 57), G.Fooks. |
