Poole Borough (3) 7, Sturminster Marshall (1) 2. Dorset County League Division 1 Saturday 8th December 2001 Borough Scorers : Alan
Fooks 18, 24, 70; Sean Hebdon 45; Alex Gunn 71; Tony
Pidgley 89, Jimmy Edwards 90. Borough reached the halfway stage of the season still unbeaten, as they recorded their 14th win against visitors Sturminster Marshall. Player/coach Alan Fooks recorded his 3rd hat trick of the season in game when the Turlin Moor side scored all 9 goals in their 7-2 victory. Sturminster surprised the home crowd by opening the scoring after only 5 minutes, when Tommy Heffernan, under pressure from a visiting striker, diverted a cross into his own net. Borough drew level 10 minutes later when Alan Fooks intercepted a defensive clearance and coolly picked his spot convert. Fooks put Borough ahead mid way through the half when he collected the ball 20 yards out and hit a low shot just inside the post. The visitors fought back and created a number of opportunities to equalise but they were denied by a combination of poor finishing and some good saves from home keeper, Dan Burton. Just before the interval Sean Hebdon made Sturminster pay for their missed chances, as the tall defender collected a free kick in the area and rifled a shot past the keeper. HT 3-1 Borough treated their supporters to some excellent passing football in the second period, but Burton was called on to make two further fine saves before Fooks recorded his hat-trick, heading home a Heffernan cross. A minute later Alex Gunn was rewarded for harrying a defender in the area, when the ball came loose and he pounced to steer it into the net. Sturminster pulled a goal back when Burton mis-kicked a Kieron Wall back pass which rolled over the line, but Borough finished with 2 goals in the last two minutes, as substitute Tony Pidgley scored with a blistering long range shot and Jimmy Edwards headed in an Alan Fooks cross just before the whistle. Borough: Dan Burton, Jimmy Edwards, Sean Clarke (Andy Coles 58), Kieron Wall, Tommy Heffernan, Sean Hebdon (Craig Shanley 78), Alex Gunn, Matt Bircumshaw, Paul Getley, Alan Fooks, Gary Fooks (Tony Pidgley 80). |
