Weymouth United (0) 2, Poole Borough (1) 2. Dorset County League Division 1 Saturday 27th October 2001 Scorers : O.G. 20,
Scott Smith 90. Borough conceded a controversial injury time equaliser to Weymouth United, after themselves taking the lead in the final minute of normal time and so drop their first points of the season. Dan Burton returned in goal after last week's appendix scare but defender Sean Hebdon was sidelined with a hamstring injury so new-signing Richie Atherton made his debut. Borough took the lead after 20 minutes when a deep cross from Gary Fooks was headed into his own net by a defender under pressure from Gunn. The rest of the half saw chances at both ends. Wall headed over from a Heffernan freekick and Burton made a flying save to deny Weymouth an equaliser and then had to dive at the feet of another attacker. HT 0-1 Weymouth came back strongly in the second half and some indecision in the Borough defence allowed an attacker to steal the ball and prod it past Burton for an equaliser in the 53rd minute. For the next ten minutes Borough were unable to get into the game and Weymouth spurned chances to increase their lead. Dan Herrington then forced the keeper to make a good save from a free kick but from an immediate counter attack Weymouth somehow failed to get a shot on target despite having three unmarked men in the box. Borough worked their way back into the game and from a corner had three successive shots blocked or cleared off the line. The Weymouth keeper was saving everything that came his way and in one scramble with five minutes to go Heffernan sustained a gashed knee and Gatley came on as substitute. In the final minute of normal time Scott Smith twisted and turned in the box to beat two defenders and score with a low shot. With only a few minutes injury time left it looked as though Borough had snatched victory but Weymouth were not to be denied, and a long ball forward found an attacker on the edge of the box who lobbed the ball over the advancing Burton into the net. The referee waved away appeals that the Weymouth man had controlled the ball with his hand and so Borough had to be satisfied with a share of the points. Borough : Dan Burton, Will Owen, Dan Herrington, Kieron Wall, Richie Atherton, Tommy Heffernan (Paul Gatley 85), Alex Gunn, Matt Bircumshaw, Scott Smith, Alan Fooks, Gary Fooks. Unused Subs.
