Borough Man of the Match : Dan Burton

Borough started well and were awarded an early free kick just outside the box after 4 minutes, but the resulting shot was struck straight at the home keeper. Wimborne made Borough pay for this miss, as they immediately took the lead when a shot from Scott Cannie was deflected into the net by Sean Hebdon.

Although Borough looked dangerous on the break, Wimborne were creating the majority of chances and went close again after Craig Shanley was beaten to a through ball, but Dan Burton pushed the resulting shot past the post. Borough’s best chance of the half came on 23 minutes when Kieron Wall sent a superb through ball into the path of Gary Fooks but his shot went narrowly past the post.

As the half progressed the Wessex League side stepped up the pressure and Burton did well to clear a bad back pass but the rebound was sent goalwards and fortunately Hebdon was on hand to clear had to off the line. Before the interval Borough rode their luck a number of times with Burton making a succession of saves, whilst the home side also hit the post.

 HT 1-0

The second half continued as the first ended, with Borough weathering the home attacks, whilst looking for a goal on the break, and they were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty when Alex Gunn was upended in the area, but the referee waved away the appeals.

Burton continued to perform heroics for Borough but was beaten again on 52 minutes as the ball was chipped over his head by Cannie before dropping just under the bar. Wimborne’s third goal came two minutes later when a Paul Getly back pass alluded Burton and rolled over the line.

In one plus for Borough, Andy Coles came on for the last 20 minutes to play in his first game of the season following a injury in pre-season, but most of the action remained in the Borough area, and Burton made three further saves to keep the score line respectable.
