Poole Borough (1) 1, Blandford United (0) 0. Elite Teamwear Dorset Premier League Saturday 21st December 2002 Borough
Scorer : Alex Gunn 42. Borough claimed all three points with an Alex Gunn goal just before the interval. Blandford, apart from a good spell in the first 15 minutes, were on the defensive for most of the game and but for some fine saves by their keeper Martin the score would have been more convincing. Blandford started well and Maitland made a fine one handed diving save to deny the visitors a goal in the first 3 minutes. A Blandford forward was unmarked from the subsequent corner but could not get his header on target. For Borough, Alan Fooks had a shot blocked and Martin then dealt competently with an Edwards long-range shot. Blandford had their best chance on 15 minutes when a lob went over Maitland's head but Hebdon got back to head off the line. That was the end of Blandford's threat for the half and Borough's defence, with Tony White making a return after injury, dealt easily with any further threat. As Borough pushed forward they found Martin in the visitor's goal in fine form. First he held a Bircumshaw header at the second attempt, and then he somehow pushed away an Alan Fooks close range volley. A goal finally came in the 42nd minute when Alan Fooks crossed from the left and as the ball dropped over Murray's head, Alex Gunn was at the far post to dive low and head the ball as Martin challenged him. The two players collided but the ball rolled over the line for a goal. HT 1-0 The second-half saw further chances for Borough, the best falling to Gary Fooks but his low shot was deflected by Martin. The game was a stalemate for much of the second-half but Borough were nearly made to pay for their lack of a second goal when Blandford broke away late in the game but the resulting shot was wide. Blandford also had a last minute free-kick just outside the area, but the shot was driven against the defensive wall. As the conditions deteriorated the referee blew the final whistle to give Borough the points and their third clean sheet of the season. Borough : Paul Maitland, James Edwards, Andy Curtis (Dan Herrington 22), Sean Hebdon, Tony White, Jamie Wilson, Alex Gunn (James Morrell 70), Matt Bircumshaw, Dan Flooks (Aaron Woldon 79), Alan Fooks, Gary Fooks. Manager's Quotes.......... Winners' boss Peter Morrell said: "It was an awful game but at least we got the points and that is all that matters." |
