Poole Borough (2) 4, Bournemouth Sports (2) 3. Elite Teamwear Dorset Premier League Saturday 19th April 2003 Borough
Scorers : Matt
Bircumshaw 4, James Edwards 45, 89, Alan Fooks 56. After two successive home defeats Borough got back to winning ways, defeating Sports in an entertaining game despite the strong wind at Turlin Moor. Borough took the lead after only 4 minutes when Matt Bircumshaw latched onto a poor back bass and tucked the ball past the stranded keeper. Sports however were level within 10 minutes when Dan Cann arrived unmarked on the left to convert a low cross. Borough showed some good approach play, but with the wind at their backs the ball was running away from them and shots from Dan Herrington and Alex Gunn were off target. Sports gave Borough a warning on 37 minutes when they broke through before shooting wide, but two minutes later Cann put the visitors ahead when he collected the ball before running into space and shooting past the advancing Paul Maitland in the home goal. However, with perfect timing James Edwards put Borough level just before the break as he latched on to a superb through ball from Scott Arnold before converting with a great strike. HT 2-2. Borough started the second period with pushing forward and took the lead on 56 minutes when Edwards lifted the ball into the area and Alan Fooks saw his first shot blocked by the keeper but converted at the second attempt. Sports pushed forward looking for a way back and Maitland was forced to make a sharp save to his left. On 72 minutes Borough were punished when a forward move broke down when a pass went astray and the ball was knocked forward to Cann to run through and complete his hat-trick. With neither side content with a single point further chances were created at each end but Edwards scored the all important goal a minutes before the end of normal time when he collected a short pass from Paul Getley and took the ball forward to the edge of the area before unleashing a low strike into the left hand corner of the net. With five minutes of injury time played Borough were forced to defend in depth to ensure they collected the full three points. Borough : Maitland, Getley, White, Herrington, Hebdon, Arnold, Gunn (Wilson 62), Edwards, S.Smith, A.Fooks (J.Morrell 84), Bircumshaw (OConnell 69). |
