Cobham Sports (1) 1, Poole Borough (1) 3. Elite Teamwear Dorset Premier League Saturday 7th September 2002 Borough
Scorers : Matt Bircumshaw 8, Alex Gunn 53, Dan
Herrington 73 Two goals in the second half gave Borough their first away points of the season but they had striker Kieron Wall sent off after clashing with Cobham's Shane Duggen. Six players also found their way into the referee's notebook although the game was not really a physical or bad-tempered affair. Cobham were the first to attack and Paul Maitland had to punch away a shot. Borough however, took the lead in the 8th minute when an excellent cross-field pass from Scott Smith found Matt Bircumshaw wide on the left and he hit a low shot past the Cobham keeper. Borough's defence was boosted by the return of ex-Wimborne skipper Tony White but it was White who the referee adjudged to have pushed an attacker as they both jumped for the ball and Staddon equalised from the resulting penalty in the 16th minute. Both teams had chances in the remainder of the first half but neither could finish. Both Wall and White hit the woodwork for Borough and there were shots cleared off the line at both ends. HT 1-1 After the interval Scott Arnold beat several defenders on a run, but the keeper blocked his shot. Cobham then had a couple of good chances, but Maitland saved at point blank range and then a shot was deflected past the post. Borough took the lead again with another well-taken goal in the 53rd minute. A cross from James Edwards was headed on by Wall and Alex Gunn stole in behind the defence to head home. Four minutes later Wall and Duggan confronted each other after a challenge and the referee gave both of them a red card. Dan Herrington was introduced as a substitute for Shaun Clarke mid-way through the half and he scored Borough's third in the 73rd minute when he headed a ball to Edwards and set off on a run down the left flank. Edwards returned the ball and Herrington cut in to score. Smith had a chance to increase the lead but failed to get in a shot from close range. A workmanlike performance from Borough that keeps them in 5th position in the league table. Borough : Paul Maitland, James Edwards, Mark Reeks, Shaun Clarke (Dan Herrington 65), Tony White, Kieron Wall, Alex Gunn (James Morrell 89), Matt Bircumshaw , Scott Smith, Scott Arnold, Dan Lomax (Sean Leaton 80). |
