Borough Man of The Match : TBA

Borough produced a below par performance as they fell to only their third home defeat of the season in the local derby.

In a tight first half, chances were limited, with an early Cobham shot going over the bar from close range, while Sean Hebdon ran onto a through pass into the area but his shot was saved low down by the post. On 24 minutes Paul Getley ran on to a quickly taken free kick down the right and his low cross ran across the face of the goal with Scott Smith and Alex Gunn just failing to connect.

Borough came close to breaking the deadlock on 31 minutes when Smith laid the ball back to Matt Bircumshaw, whose well struck shot from 25 yards out came back off of the visitors cross bar.

Tony White also came close for Borough with a long range shot, but Cobham sent out a warning ten minutes from the break as a quick counter attack down the right ended with Adam Nash forced to make a good save to deny Ryan Toms.

HT 0-0.

Borough stepped up a gear in the second half and Smith made an immediate impact sending in a cross from the by-line which just alluded Gunn running into the box.

Bircumshaw and Gary Fooks both went close with shots from distance, but against the run of play Cobham took the lead on 58 minutes as they broke quickly from a Borough corner and Toms made a great run through the Borough defence before finishing well.

Borough pushed forward looking for a way back and Getley received a Lee O’Connell pass in the area, before turning well but his shot went wide. On 75 minutes Borough were denied what looked like a clear penalty when Smith went to ground after being tackled from behind as he ran in on goal, but referee Joyce waved away the home side’s appeals.

Further chances were created for Scott Arnold whose volley from a Tony White free kick went over and another Smith cross was hacked desperately clear with O’Connell and Fooks both bearing leaving Cobham to hold out to secure all three points.

Borough: Adam Nash, Lee O'Connell, Tony White, Dan Herrington, Sean Hebdon, Paul Getley, Alex Gunn (Scott Arnold 61), Matt Bircumshaw, Scott Smith, James Morrell (Bradley Asagba 78), Gary Fooks. Unused sub: Aaron Woldon.

Manager's Comments..........

Cobham boss Ian Cunningham was delighted with his young side. He said "Looking at the league table, and after the way they thrashed us at our place, it was a great resilt. The las grew up a lot and I think we deserved it. I did not arrive at the game until 10 minutes before half-time but from what I saw we looked comfortable and I was told we were well on to, though there had been chances at either end. They came back at us after the goal but our lads worked hard. They had a definite penalty turned down in the final 10 minutes. Both teams knew it was a penalty but the referee must have felt their lad over-elaborated a bit. We have told our players many times that if they put the effort in then they will get their reward. they did that and I am chuffed for them."

Hornets boss Pete Morrell said: "We were awful to be fair they are a good bunch. They were a bit more desperate for the result than we were. We came into the match off the back of three successive wins and some of the lads probably looked at the league table and thought it was going to be easy - they showed Cobham disrespect."
