Dorchester Town Reserves (2) 5, Poole Borough (2) 2. Elite Teamwear Dorset Premier League Wednesday 20th November 2002 Borough Scorer:
Matt Bircumshaw 3, 38. Borough twice took the lead in the first half at the Avenue Stadium but despite working hard against a Magpies side including a number of first teamers, succumbed to a second half hat-trick from former Bashley striker Phil Andrews. The home side came close almost straight from the kick off, but Borough opened the scoring after only 3 minutes when Matt Bircumshaw collected the ball wide on the right and his low shot bounced over the dive of Chris Eastman and into the home goal. The Magpies levelled 3 minutes later when a lob from outside the box dropped over the head of Paul Maitland, and for the next 10 minutes pushed Borough back, hitting the post with another shot. As the half progressed Borough began to make inroads and Danny Chappell came close, spinning away from his marker to latch onto a Gary Fooks through ball but he shot narrowly wide. The Hornets took the lead again on 38 minutes when a free kick on the edge of the area was squared to Bircumshaw and his shot went through a sea of players and into the net. Dorchester however came back again just before the break and a low cross from the left was steered in at the near post. HT 2-2 The second half started with both sides creating chances, Paul Getley on his return to the Borough side doing well on the line to steer a cross away from danger, whilst a Gary Fooks free kick went just over the bar and Bircumshaw just failed to latch on to a cross at the far post. Borough had a let off on 59 minutes when Maitland looked to have brought Andrews down in the area, but almost immediately the home striker broke through again and rode two tackles before finishing well. Borough kept pushing forward and from a corner the ball fell to Jamie Wilson but he shot over. Andrew's second 10 minutes from time came after he appeared to impede Fooks before tucking home the loose ball and his final goal came in injury time after a quick break away, firing home from just inside the area. Borough : Paul Maitland, James Edwards, Mark Reeks, Paul Getley (James Morrell 78), Scott Arnold (Lawriw North 46), Dan Herrington, Alex Gunn, Matt Bircumshaw, Scott Smith, Danny Chappell (Jamie Wilson 66), Gary Fooks. |
