Holt United (0) 2, Poole Borough (0) 0. Elite Teamwear Dorset Premier League Saturday 14th December 2002 Borough Man of The Match : Gary Fooks Two goals early in the second half sealed Holt United's first victory against Borough in an entertaining game given the wet conditions underfoot. Borough came close to opening scoring after only 3 minutes when a James Edwards shot deflected to Sean Hebdon at the far post, but despite three attempts he was unable to force the ball over a packed goal line. Holt came straight back and Paul Maitland did well to gather a Kevin Blackhan header at the second attempt. Danny Flooks showed good skill to collect a forward pass and took the ball past keeper Jon Brown in the home goal but defender Dave Miller managed to nip in to clear for a corner.. The home side's swift attacks on the break were testing the Borough defence. On 15 minutes Garry Clarke managed to take the ball past the advancing Maitland but his shot was off target and Gary Fooks cleared. Danny Herrington did well to execute a last ditch tackle and Maitland held a shot from Kevin Blackham as Borough defended well to keep the scores even at the break. HT 0-0 Immediately after the interval Alan Fooks saw a right wing cross headed off the line by Blackham, while Maitland was forced to dive low to his left to push a Blackham free-kick past the post and a further home attack ended with a shot from Simon Cooke coming back off the upright. The deadlock was broken on 54 minutes when Darren Vye nipped in front of Maitland to head home a free kick. Six minutes later, Holt increased their lead with a well-struck shot from outside the area by Blackham. Almost immediately Danny Flooks broke through for Borough but his shot was superbly tipped over by Brown, who later denied the young striker again as he attempted to squeeze a low right wing cross from Gunn inside the near post. With Borough pushing forward in numbers, Alan Fooks broke through and Brown again did well to block his shot but the rebound fell to Matt Bircumshaw who shot just wide. With five minutes remaining, another shot by Fooks came back off the keeper's legs and into the path of Herrington but his shot went over, and Boroughs dominance of the final 30 minutes was left un-rewarded. Borough : Paul Maitland, James Edwards, Dan Herrington, Sean Hebdon, Jamie Wilson, Andy Curtis (Shane Milne 64), Alex Gunn (James Morrell 79), Matt Bircumshaw, Danny Flooks, Alan Fooks, Gary Fooks. Manager's Quotes.......... Reflecting on the weekend success, Holt boss Steve Norman said: "It was a very good display - the lads performed and I was am very pleased with their attitude. Gary Rawlins was superb in midfield - he was excellent, our man of the match - and our keeper Jon Brown kept us in it when they had chances." |
