Poole Borough (0) 0, Hamworthy Recreation (2) 4. Elite Teamwear Dorset Premier League Cup Saturday 7th December 2002 Borough Man of The Match : James Edwards Crispin Rigler showed why he has attracted the interest of Dr Martens League Weymouth after collecting a hat trick for Hamworthy Recreation in their Dorset Premier League Cup victory against Borough. The Hornets however can take heart from a good second half performance as they looked to come back from a two-goal deficit, and their resistance only ended after two late Hamworthy strikes. Recreation were one up inside three minutes after Sean Hebdon just failed to intercept a forward pass, which found Rigler on the right and the tall striker ran through to score. Borough came close to equalising when Alex Gunn created space on the right and sent in a low cross which Matt Bircumshaw met at the edge of the area, but his shot went narrowly wide. Recreation also put a good chance wide before Alan Fooks latched on to a defence splitting pass by Bircumshaw but was also unfortunate to see his close range shot balloon over the bar. The visitors increased their lead on 21 minutes as Rigler collected the ball on the edge of the area and created space before coolly tucking the ball inside the left hand post. Borough continued to probe forward but their attempts were foiled by the well organised Recreation defence and just before the break home keeper Paul Maitland had to make two fine saves, the second denying another Rigler break-through with his legs, to keep Borough in the game. HT 0-2 Borough stepped up their attacking play and dominated the first 10 minutes following the restart. Scott Smith went close with a shot on the turn after Hebdon did well to flick on a free kick and Alan Fooks saw a chance blocked on the line whilst his attempt from the rebound went just over. James Edwards also went close as he rode two tackles to take the ball to the edge of the area, but his shot went wide. Jamie Wilson drilled in a low ball into the box from the left on 62 minutes but Smith was just unable to get a touch at the far post but Recreation, who appeared content to soak up the pressure, remained a threat on the break, forcing Maitland to push a close range header past the post on 71 minutes while the resulting corner was blasted over the bar. Borough's best chance came 15 minutes from time as Bircumshaw stole into the box and got his head to a lobbed cross from Fooks but the chance went just the wrong side of the post. With Borough's continued forays forward leaving space at the back, Hamworthy took advantage to increase the lead a minute from time with a near post header from Simon Brett and deep in injury time Rigler capitalised on a defensive mistake to run through and collect his third. Poole Borough : Paul Maitland, James Edwards, Craig Shanley, Sean Hebdon, Paul Getley (Andy Curtis 85), Dan Herrington (Jamie Wilson 59), Alex Gunn, Matt Bircumshaw, Scott Smith (Danny Flooks 77), Alan Fooks, Gary Fooks. Manager's Quotes.......... Hamworthy boss Pat Notley said: "It was a good game. They are not a bad side and they played some very good football. They are the only team to heat us in the league so far this season so we were really up for it. Cris is on fire at the moment." Hornets' manager Peter Morrell said: `For 35 minutes of the second half we dominated but after going two goals behind it was always going to he difficult. Cris Rigler was the main difference between the sides - he is a quality finisher who is scoring for fun at the moment." |
