Poole Borough Reserves (2) 4,
Bere Regis (0) 1.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 26th April 2003

Things started brightly and both teams had some fairly decent chances, but it Borough who opened the scoring with a 25 yarder from ATKINS at the edge of the area that was placed to perfection. Soon after Borough's Andy Phillips was sent off for a rash challenge but this seemed to inspire them to greater things, and GRIFFIN scored another from a tap in at the back post.

HT 2-0

WOLDON despatched a penalty for the third with ease and ISON the fourth after a series of defensive mistakes from the visitors but Bere pulled a goal back from the Penalty spot after Giles Kilshawe between the sticks was sent the wrong way.

Poole Borough Reserves (2) 3,
Stickland United (1) 2.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 19th April 2003

Borough reserves chalked up another win with a very workmanlike performance against a Stickland side who came to the Moor determined to put one over Borough, Stickland settled the quicker as Borough appeared to go through the motions, 4 minutes in and a long ball into the Borough defence was not dealt with and the ball ran to a Stickland forward who squeezed the ball in at the near post 0-1 This appeared to focus Borough as they started to play their way into the game, chances were created with FLOOKS and WOLDON both going close, too many times though Borough found themselves off side as Stickland employed the off side game to good effect, however in the 17th minute WOLDON sprung the trap to race clear and calmly go past the keeper to finish neatly 1-1 A minute later and the lead was increased as a good ball by CLARKE found WOLDON who volleyed home with some style 2-1 The game ebbed and flowed with no real chances of note, SHEAR had to alert in the 31st minute to save a good Stickland shot, minutes later and CLARKE had a great chance to increase the lead from 5 yards but he blasted over !!!

H.T 2-1

Once again the pattern of the second half followed the first with both sides playing some good football, few chances were created but both keepers played well as and when they were called upon, in the 73rd minute Stickland mounted a 4 man move that saw their forwards shot rifle home to bring the score's level 2-2 It was no more than they deserved. Once again Borough re grouped and minutes later a great centre in by MOHANGEE was met by ASAGBA to head home at the far post 3-2. The final few minutes were played out as neither side threatened the score line again and with GILES having to come on as a late replacement up front this was never going to change !!!

Poole Borough Reserves (2) 2,
Linthorpe (1) 2.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 12th April 2003

Borough Reserves secured runners up spot in the league and hopefully promotion with a hard fought draw against a Linthorpe side who although big in size offered little, except the long ball game and dirty spoiling tactics that resulted in one of their players correctly being shown the red card for an off the ball incident mid way through the second half.

Played at Turlin Moor, Borough settled quickly to their task as they probed Linthorpe, only for attacks to be halted by fouls, it was from a free kick that CONSTABLE nearly opened the scoring when his header went just over in the 11th minute. From the resulting goal kick Borough did take the lead when the kick was headed on by SHANLEY to WOLDON whose pass found CONSTABLE who duly smashed the ball home 1-0 Minutes later and the lead was increased when a Borough corner found CONSTABLE on the edge off the box, he calmly volleyed home before being swamped by his team mates 2-0 Borough appeared to then take their foot off the pedal as Linthorpe claimed a stranglehold on proceedings, long balls over the top caused problems and Borough’s new keeper SHEAR had to be alert in the 34th minute to deny Linthorpe’s forward with a good save. However he was helpless in the 38th minute when another ball down the middle was converted with a good finish 2-1 Linthorpe sensed an equaliser before the half and further chances went close with ALLEN denying them with a last ditch tackle.

H.T 2-1

The second half became a battle for Borough as Linthorpe continually pressed forward looking to score, chances fell to both sides with SHEAR playing well in the Borough goal and WOLDON going close on a couple of occasions. 66 minutes in and Linthorpe were down to 10 men when one of their player's head butted FLOOKS. This appeared to re juvenate Linthorpe as they started to play some good football, again the Borough defence stood firm with, in the 83rd minute a goal line clearance from CURTIS summing up Borough’s desire not to lose. With 4 minutes to go a Linthorpe corner was met un challenged as the ball ended up in the net from a header 2-2 No further chances of note were created except a speculative volley from FLOOKS that went wide.

A delighted GILES paid tribute to his side for their efforts in securing runners up spot and gaining back to back promotions.

Poole Borough Reserves (3) 8,
Milborne St. Andrew (0) 1.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 5th April 2003

36 Shots at goal and 22 corners reflects how one sided this game was as Poole Borough totally dominated Milborne from start to finish. To Milborne’s credit, they never threw the towel in and tried to attack but good defending and excellent team play saw Borough claim the points. It was a surprise to all that were watching that it took until the half hour for Borough to take the lead when ironically Milborne’s first shot was easily saved by MAITLAND, his long kick was headed on by ISON for SHANLEY to neatly finish 1-0 before that, various chances for ISON, ATKINS, NORTH, SHANLEY and WHEATCROFT all came to nothing. 35 minutes in and a well directed centre from SHANLEY was headed home powerfully by ISON 2-0 Again further chances were squandered before, in the 45th minute, ISON headed in from a corner 3-0

H.T 3-0

The second half followed the same pattern as the first with Borough on top creating many chances only to see a combination of bad misses and good saves thwart them. It took until the 65th minute for the next goal when an ISON shot was parried into the path of ATKINS who slotted home 4-0 Straight from the kick off, ATKINS won the ball took it all the way to the by-line, he crossed for MOHANGEE to nod home 5-0 Following a succession of 3 corners in the 75th minute, Borough increased their lead when ATKINS tapped home a cross from CONSTABLE 6-0 Minutes later and Milborne valiantly reduced the arrears when their first corner sailed directly in after a defender ducked !!! 6-1 With time running out, Borough poured forward and were unlucky to see a COLLYER effort ruled off side, not to be outdone in the 86th minute, COLLYER finished a sweeping Borough move with a well taken finish 7-1 A few minutes later ATKINS was crudely fouled in the box for a penalty, he stepped up to score and complete a well deserved hat trick 8-1 With results going Borough’s way, 1 more point is needed from the remaining 3 games to secure runners up spot in the league and a well deserved, back to back, promotion.

Poole Borough Reserves (3) 3,
Poole Royal Mail (0) 1.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 29th March 2003

Poole Borough reserves answered their manager's questions in the best possible way with a performance, especially the first half, that Giles ranked as the best of the season so far, the desire and passion on display blew P&P away as the reserves played some inspired football. With two new signings on show and a few changes to the line up, Borough settled quickly and forced no fewer than four corners in the opening ten minutes, chances fell to ATKINS and SHANLEY whose efforts all went close. 11 minutes and Borough took the lead when an ATKINS corner was adjudged, by the referee, to have gone directly in 1-0 Minutes later and a quickly taken free kick was squared to TOWNSEND whose shot was well saved. MAITLAND had to be alert in the Borough goal to deny P&P in the 28th minute and from his clearance Borough scored again when a quick throw in from WHEATCROFT found ATKINS whose cross was well converted by new boy ISON at the near post 2-0 Minutes later and an incisive through ball from NORTH found ATKINS who calmly drew the keeper before lobbing the ball into the net 3-0 The remainder of the half saw further chances fall for ISON, ATKINS and SHANLEY as P&P offered little in the way of attacking play.

H.T 3-0

The second half saw Borough still take the game to the opposition but P&P stepped up a gear as they found some fighting spirit, 56 minutes gone and a deep cross into the Borough box saw the P&P forward head home to reduce the arrears 3-1 Borough’s defence had to be resolute as P&P created more chances over the next 15 minutes or so, only a combination off good defending and MAITLAND pulling off 2 top drawer saves kept the score line the same. Borough battled well and slowly re asserted themselves on the game ISON had a shot that hit the post and NORTH’s effort was well saved by the visiting keeper. No further chances of note were created by either side as the game ended. A battling Borough performance was rewarded with the 3 points that could go a long way to securing second spot in the division.

Sturminster Marshall Reserves (0) 2,
Poole Borough Reserves (0) 0.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 22nd March 2003

Played on a gloriously sunny day, Borough succumbed to their third defeat in four matches against a well-organised Sturminster side whose tactics of the offside trap, aided by a flag happy club linesman !!!, and a long ball game easily beat Borough who showed little desire or fighting qualities. The game set of at a fast pace with the ball spending more time in the air than on the deck, 6 minutes in and a MORLEY effort, making his debut, was tipped onto the bar by the Stur keeper. Minutes later and MAITLAND was called upon to make a save at the feet of a Stur forward after a long ball over the top of the Borough defence. Borough’s best chance of the half, and match, fell to ASAGBA who mis kicked his shot with an empty net and then dragged a rebound wide. Sturminster kept employing the long ball game as too many Borough attacks were halted for off side decisions.

H.T 0-0

Sturminster pressed quickly at the start of the half and a free kick went just wide after a needless free kick was conceded by the Borough defence. The deadlock was broken in the 50th minute when another long ball down the Borough left was centred for the Stur forward to neatly finish 0-1 Borough had been in this position before this season and were looking to get back into the game but there appeared to be no fight in them as too many passes were wasted, challenges not made and a lack of passion throughout. Sturminster seized the initiative and only a point blank stop by MAITLAND kept the score down, however he was helpless in the 66th minute when a quickly taken throw in, with no reaction from Borough, was taken down the right, a quick cross in and it was in the net 0-2 To sum up the afternoon, it took until the 79th minute for Borough to register a shot when NORTH’s effort went close. The remainder of the game petered out as Sturminster pressed forward searching for more goals only good work by ALLEN and SHANLEY prevented this.

A disappointed GILES questioned his side's attitude after this poor showing as a sombre dressing room reflected on the reserves worst performance of the season. He has challenged his side to prove to him and themselves "That they have the bottle and desire to get promotion" starting next week against Poole & Parkstone in a 6 pointer that will go a long way to determine who will get runners up spot in the league.

Holt United Reserves (0) 6,
Poole Borough Reserves (1) 2.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 15th March 2003

A bitterly disappointed GILES was left to reflect on what might have been after seeing the reserves well beaten by a determined Holt side who took a giant leap to securing the division 3 N&E title with this emphatic win. With many enforced changes due to injuries and players dropping out, the reserves took to the field buoyed by the inclusion of several first team players and it was a combination of HERRINGTON and BIRCUMSHAW in the 5th minute that saw a free kick well saved by the Holt keeper. The opening half saw chances for both sides with HERRINGTON creating problems for the home defence and it was his ball in the 31st minute that saw BIRCUMSHAW calmly latch onto and steer the ball into the net 1-0 At this stage of the match things were going well for the reserves, however this was to change in the 35th minute when a moment of madness saw FOOKS sent off for raising his hand to an opponent, who made a meal of the incident, after a late tackle. Up to half time further chances were created for Borough with BIRCUMSHAW going close.

H.T 1-0

Borough knew Holt would come at them but they were not resolute enough to cope with the opening onslaught at the start of the half, 46 minutes in and Holt win a corner, a good ball in and a free header later 1-1 49 minutes and a cross into the Borough box deceived the defence leaving the forward to hook the ball into the net 1-2 Minutes later, a long ball forward saw the Holt forward beat MAITLAND to the ball and guide it into the empty net 1-3 Still reeling from this moments later the Holt forward found himself in acres of space 1-4 Borough tried to get back into the game but there appeared to be a lack of desire as Holt looked threatening on every attack. With 73 minutes on the clock a corner for Holt saw the kick sail directly in 1-5 This just about summed up the second half display. With 8 minutes to go, Borough were handed a lifeline !! when a Holt defender spectacularly headed into his own net 2-5 Borough’s dismal second half performance was compounded with minutes to go when another long ball deceived MAITLAND and it was easily finished 2-6

Congratulations go to Holt who deservedly look like they will be champions and it has given the reserves something to aim at in regard to passion and hunger to win a game of football. GILES will be looking for a marked response in the next game as they strive for the other promotion spot. It was adequately summed up after the game "As being a bad day at the office, a very bad day !!!! "

Allendale 'A' (0) 0,
Poole Borough Reserves (5) 8.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 1st March 2003

Normal service was resumed for the reserves after they thrashed a spirited Allendale side, so responding to their manager’s request to get back to playing good football and working hard out on the pitch. As early as the 2nd minute the floodgates opened when a well-taken ATKINS corner was powerfully met by TOWNSEND to score with his head 1-0 Corners were to be a thorn in Allendale’s side as further ones caused problems throughout the game. The next goal came on 11 minutes when NORTH was fouled in the box for a penalty, up stepped TOWNSEND to smash the ball home 2-0 Borough at this stage were playing some good football with PHILLIPS, ATKINS and FLOOKS all combining well. On 21 minutes, a free kick to Borough 15 yards into their own half !! was taken by TOWNSEND who saw his kick sail over the keeper and into the roof of the net 3-0 So completing a well deserved hat-trick.Allendale’s first chance came on 26 minutes when a shot was comfortably saved by MAITLAND, 4 minutes later and NORTH increased the lead when he turned quickly and rifled the ball home 4-0 Further chances came and went for Borough but right on half time a SHANLEY shot was fumbled by the keeper only to fall at the feet of FLOOKS who slotted home 5-0

H.T 5-0

The second half for long periods was a scrappy affair with niggly fouls being conceded by both sides, changes were made by Borough with all the substitutes getting a run out and following an excellent through ball by NORTH, saw COLLYER score from the corner of the box 6-0 At this stage of the game, the heavens decided to get in on the act as it poured down so making the pitch, already heavy, a quagmire. It was to Borough’s credit that the last quarter of the game was played well as they got back to playing football, with 12 minutes to go a long range effort from ATKINS deceived the keeper as the ball skidded across the surface 7-0 Not to be outdone minutes later FLOOKS tried his luck and once again the ball crashed into the net 8-0 The final few minutes of the game saw Allendale’s best 2 chances of the game, the first a shot just wide and the second a thunderous shot that cannoned back off the bar and away to safety.

A delighted GILES was happy with the performance and the 3 points but still would like to see the petty, whining behaviour stop from certain players who are slowly undermining the team spirit. " If a player cannot enjoy playing for the Borough, especially when winning well, maybe it’s time for a change ? " Commented GILES.

Poole Borough Reserves (2) 2,
Kingston Lacy (2) 3.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 15th February 2003

A distinctly below par performance saw Borough lose to a very competitive Lacy side who thoroughly deserved their victory so ending the Reserves long unbeaten league run stretching back to September 2001. How things could have been different if 1st TOWNSEND and then HERRINGTON had converted their second half penalties, but even so, Borough did not deserve to get anything from the game as too many players just went through the motions.

As early as the first minute, Borough were rocked when a weak back header was intercepted and nicely finished off by the Lacy forward 0-1 Borough tried to get into the game but too many passes went astray or fancy little flicks never came off, Lacy harassed and created chances but none were taken. With 22 minutes gone, FLOOKS found himself in some space, he turned and shot in off the post to bring the scores level 1-1 This goal seemed to kick start the game for Borough as good efforts from FLOOKS, HERRINGTON and ARNOLD went close, 35 minutes in and good work by FLOOKS saw his cross converted by CURTIS at the far post 2-1 This should of been the time for Borough to press forward and try to kill the game, but Lacy refused to lay down, they pressed forward in search of an equaliser and were duly awarded a controversial penalty on the stroke of half time when ATKINS was adjudged to of handled whilst on the ground. Despite the protests the decision stood and Lacy converted 2-2

H.T 2-2

Lacy came out at the start of the half sensing they could win the game only good work by MAITLAND and a fine defensive tackle from SHANLEY saved Borough, however they were both helpless when another good Lacy move saw them retake the lead with a neatly converted chance 2-3 Borough pressed forward trying to find the equaliser and were awarded another dubious penalty when a free kick into the box saw FLOOKS impeded. Up stepped TOWNSEND who put his shot wide. Lacy still looked dangerous on the break and they defended admirably but, with 6 minutes to go another penalty award for Borough saw HERRINGTON miss to the same side as the first penalty, all those watching knew that it was not going to be Borough’s day as the final few minutes petered out.

Take nothing away from KINGSTON LACY their desire to win and combative approach far outplayed Borough, who must learn from this game, GILES will be expecting a far better performance next week !!!

Stickland United (1) 2,
Poole Borough Reserves (2) 3.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 1st February 2003

Another battling win for Borough as they overcame losing their goal keeper a couple of hours before the game, this resulted in ATKINS having to step in as cover and the side having to re organise its shape. Played on a heavy pitch against a good physical !! side Borough knew they would be in for a game and so it proved with Stickland scoring in the 1st minute following a mix up in the Borough box, the ball fell to the Stickland forward who slotted the ball into the empty net 0-1 Borough looked all at sea in the opening minutes but gradually settled down to the job in hand, chances for FLOOKS and WOLDON were not taken, in the 15th minute, a free kick from HERRINGTON caused confusion in the Stickland box and the ball fell to SHANLEY to smash home 1-1 Minutes later and ATKINS pulled of a good save to deny Stickland, further chances fell to MOHANGEE and FLOOKS but a mixture of rushing and poor direction saw efforts wasted. With 30 minutes on the clock a cross into the Stickland penalty area saw a defender head pass his own keeper to give Borough the lead 2-1 That’s the way it stayed for the rest of the half.

H.T 2-1

Borough came out with all guns blazing and should have been further ahead when HERRINGTON put his shot over when it looked easier to score in the 46th minute. Minutes later only a last ditch tackle from CONSTABLE, following an ATKINS mad moment !!, prevented the scores from being levelled. Further chances for Borough were squandered as the game drew on and it came as no surprise when Stickland equalised from a free kick outside of the box on 64 minutes. A direct kick was scuffed along the ground only to deceive ATKINS at his near post 2-2 Back came Borough as FLOOKS drew a smart save from the Stickland keeper with his legs. The final 15 minutes saw Borough step up a gear in search of a winner, chances were created and not taken until the ball fell to HERRINGTON in the 82nd minute, when he smacked the ball home from 30 yard's 3-2 With time running out, COLLYER nearly increased the lead only to see his shot cannon back of the post. NORTH received a well-deserved man of the match award for another outstanding display in the centre of midfield.

Shaftesbury 'A' (0) 1,
Poole Borough Reserves (1) 2.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 1st February 2003

Giles regarded this as the best team performance given by the reserves so far this season, played on a very heavy pitch against a good side Borough’s battling and never say die qualities shone through. Playing with the slope in the first half, Borough took the game to Shaftesbury creating good early chances notably for CONSTABLE in the 7th minute when he forced a good save from the keeper. A penalty claim for Borough was turned down in the 20th minute when FLOOKS appeared to be bundled of the ball. Borough had to reorganise minutes later when a crude tackle on HERRINGTON left him flat out with a nasty foot injury, Shaftesbury came more into the game forcing MACKENZIE into 2 good saves. In the 35th minute however, Borough deservedly took the lead when FLOOKS charged down the keeper to poke the ball home 1-0 Further chances fell to ATKINS and FLOOKS, who both tried long range efforts, as the half came to a close.

H.T 1-0

With ATKINS unable to start the second half due to injury, and HERRINGTON already off the pitch Shaftesbury sensed a chance to press forward and put the Borough defence under a lot of pressure, chances came and went for Shaftesbury as SHANLEY and the rest of the defence held firm, when the ball did get through, MACKENZIE pulled off a couple of great finger tip saves to keep Borough in the game, however, he was defenceless in the 60th minute when a good Shaftesbury move resulted in a near post conversion for their forward 1-1 The next 25 minutes saw few chances for Borough as they held firm against continual Shaftesbuty attacks, once again MACKENZIE pulling off vital saves. As the game drew on Borough slowly got back on top with good chances falling for PHILLIPS, CONSTABLE and FLOOKS who all saw efforts go close. With the 90 minutes up and a draw looking like the outcome, a good through ball to WOLDON saw him hold off the defender, calmly wait for the keeper to commit and then calmly finish in the bottom corner 2-1 It was no more than Borough deserved. MACKENZIE received the man of the match award for some outstanding saves that kept his team in the game but credit goes to the whole side for their battling efforts.

Forest Inn (0) 0,
Poole Borough Reserves (5) 12.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 25th January 2003

The reserves recorded their 30th league game in succession without defeat, so breaking the first team’s record of 29 games, with an emphatic 12 goal demolition of a plucky Forest Inn side who on the day were not good enough to match Poole Borough Reserves. It was also the reserves highest aggregate score eclipsing the 11 goal margin attained last season in the 13-2 demolition of TJ’s, also to cap a great day, DANNY FLOOKS equalled the club individual goal scoring record by scoring 6 times. Played on a good pitch and with a strong wind in their faces, Borough took the game to Forest with some good football, however in the 6th minute NASH had to be quick off his line to thwart a Forest attack, a minute later a free kick by HERRINGTON found ATKINS un marked at the far post 1-0 Good efforts followed for BIRCUMSHAW and notably FLOOKS who saw various attempts saved. It wasn't until the 34th minute that the lead was increased when FLOOKS latched onto a keeper error to prod the ball home 2-0 Straight from the kick off, Borough regained the ball, 2 passes and the ball was at FLOOKS feet who then chipped the keeper from 25 yards 3-0 Not to be out done, HERRINGTON matched FLOOKS in the finishing stakes with another well executed lob in the 38th minute for 4-0 With half time approaching, another good move saw HERRINGTON score with a well taken goal 5-0

H.T 5-0

The second half followed the first, with Borough totally dominating the game, the 6th goal was not long in coming when a good through ball to FLOOKS saw him claim his hat trick with a crisp finish 6-0 A minute later and FLOOKS scored again with a tap in following neat work from WOLDON and COLLYER 7-0 Chances came and went as Borough looked to score on every attack, misses from BIRCUMSHAW, COLLYER, WOLDON and FLOOKS to name but a few. Goal 8 was an OG after a defender inadvertently deflected a ATKINS shot that might have been going wide !!!! 8-0 A few minutes later and CONSTABLE got in on the scoring act with a well taken finish at the far post 9-0 To Forest Inn’s credit, they kept trying to play football and never totally surrendered in the face of relentless attacks and it wasn't until 6 minutes from time that the 10th goal went in from another FLOOKS lob 10-0 FLOOKS completed his double hat trick in the 86th minute following a long range shot 11-0 And to end a quality performance, WOLDON popped up in the last minute to neatly finish another good Borough move 12-0

Poole Royal Mail (2) 2,
Poole Borough Reserves (2) 3.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 18th January 2003

Poole Borough reserves picked up a welcome 3 points after a battling win at Upton against the mail men. The game exploded into life with 2 goals in the opening 2 minutes with P&P taking the lead with a well taken free kick from the edge of the box 0-1 Borough went straight down the other end, forced a corner and from HERRINGTON’s in swinger a P&P defender sliced the ball into his own net for an O.G 1-1 after this the game settled down with Borough looking dangerous from set plays.MACKENZIE was forced to make a great save when a P&P forward raced through for a 1 on 1 situation, this was closely followed by a long range effort which was easily dealt with by MACKENZIE, from his kick out Borough were awarded a free kick, up stepped HERRINGTON who saw his shot fumbled by the keeper only for CURTIS to scramble the ball over the line 2-1 further chances were created for both sides with defences getting the better, however with a minute to go till half time, P&P forced a corner, from which their forward was given a free header in the box to equalise 2-2 once again Borough responded with FLOOKS shooting from distance only to see his goal bound shot superbly tipped round the post.

H.T 2-2

The second half was a much tighter affair with both sides searching for a winner, chances fell to both sides but none were taken. Borough’s best efforts were from HERRINGTON, CONSTABLE and FLOOKS with efforts just wide, the bar came to Poole’s rescue in the 58th minute when another free header was granted in the penalty box. Borough's defence held firm as the game wore on with good work from MACKENZIE and WHEATCROFT keeping P&P at bay. With the game heading for a draw, Borough were awarded a free kick, 25yards out, in the 88th minute, up stepped FLOOKS to slam the ball home giving the opposition keeper no chance 3-2 No further chances of note happened as the game came to its conclusion, all in all a satisfying result, the 3 points were key to keep our promotion charge on course, the performance was better than in the previous game and the battling qualities were still very much evident.

Kingston Lacy (0) 1,
Poole Borough Reserves (0) 1.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 4th January 2003

Borough reserves put in a poor display to mark the new year and were fortunate to gain a point from a Lacy side who showed more desire to win the game. With the first team game cancelled changes were made to the side to include returning players from injury, on paper the reserves had a very strong line up but on the day could not find any cohesion in their football. Played on a bumpy pitch, the opening passages of play yielded few chances for both teams, Lacy going closest when their forward headed over from 6 yards, Borough slowly awoke to press forward as the half drew close with chances going begging for CHAPPLE, FOOKS and EDWARDS, still Lacy were intent on the long ball and they nearly scored on half time only for NASH to make a save.

H.T 0-0

The second half followed the same pattern as the first with little fluent football on show from either side, again Lacy went close from long ball situations only to be denied by poor finishing or NASH in goal, after 65 minutes CHAPPLE had, up till then, Borough’s best chance when a square ball from SMITH found himself with only the keeper to beat, how he got the ball stuck under his foot will remain a mystery and the chance went begging. With a little over 12 minutes to play, Lacy broke forward and put together a move that saw them take the lead with a well taken goal 0-1 this clearly rattled Borough as they searched for an equaliser and with 6 minutes to go it arrived after a quickly taken free kick from EDWARDS found WHITE in the box to smash the ball home 1-1 from the kick off Borough again poured forward forcing a succession of corners, WHITE again went close from a header which drew a good save from the Lacy keeper. The final few minutes saw few chances as the game fizzled out to a disappointing draw.

Saturday 21st December 2002

Another good all round performance ensured the 3 points for Poole Borough reserves, it also made sure that they went through the whole of 2002 without losing a league game. Playing away at Sixpenny Handley, on a superb facility, Borough took control of the early stages forcing their keeper into a couple of good saves from ATKINS and PHILLIPS, it was in the 17th minute when the deadlock was broken following a quick one/two between ATKINS and CHAPPLE saw the ball break for CONSTABLE to stab home 1-0 Borough kept creating whilst Handley resorted to the long ball over the top and it was in the 40th minute, and with the fog descending, that they equalised with a neatly taken goal 1-1 no further chances fell to either side.

H.T 1-1

The reserves responded well to their half time talk and stepped up a gear at the start of the half forcing Handley on the back foot, chances came and went notably for CHAPPLE, NORTH and a couple for ARNOLD, who was making a timely return from injury, his second shot troubled Santa in the sky more than the Handley keeper !!! Eventually the pressure paid of with 2 goals in as many minutes, the 1st came in the 58th minute when CLARKE cut in from the left to rifle his low shot in 2-1 a minute later CHAPPLE was denied by a block only for the ball to run to ATKINS to slot home 3-1 more chances came and went as the gloom descended on the pitch, Handley continued with their long ball game and in the 81st minute, and following another long ball they got themselves back into the game when their forward latched onto the ball to score 3-2 Any thoughts of a Handley revival were quickly extinguished by Borough as straight from the kick off a good through ball by BARTON saw CHAPPLE beat the keeper 4-2 one more chance fell to ARNOLD who saw his chance go close.

ANDY PHILLIPS picked up the man of the match award for his steady performance in defence.

Saturday 14th December 2002

This was a hard fought draw obtained from a very good match with both sides commited to attack. It was evident to all at Turlin Moor that these 2 teams will be up the top come the end of the season. The marked improvement in Boroughs attitude and play was a vast improvement on the previous week's efforts !! The players responded well to the challenge of proving they deserved to be rated as one of the best in division 3 from GILES as they matched Holt in all departments. A draw was a fair result, the only question was how either side did not score, as early as the 3rd minute, a good Holt move saw their forward’s shot cannon back off the bar and away to safety, Borough responded quickly with a couple of chances for CHAPPLE and that's how the half progressed with end to end football and chances for both sides going close. Borough’s best chance of the half was a long range effort from ATKINS which the Holt keeper just held on to.

H.T 0-0

The second half followed the same pattern as the first with defences coming out on top, TOWNSEND superbly marshalling the Borough Defence with ALLEN,WHEATCROFT and new signing YOUNG, another youngster, all playing their part. In the 65th minute WOLDON went close with a shot and PHILLIPS tried his luck from distance 5 minutes later. Neither side took a stranglehold on the game as the games best chance fell to Holt with a few minutes remaining, their forward shot from distance and it was heading into the top corner only for NASH to finger tip the ball over for a corner, a great save. The man of the match award went to TOWNSEND for his all round performance.

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 7th December 2002

To the outsider this result would suggest that Borough lost 2 points, when in fact, considering the way Borough played, it was a point gained. There appeared to be no cohesion in Borough’s play as it was very evident that Bere Regis were "up for the game" they were first to the tackle, picked up the second ball and battled for the whole 100 minutes played !!! Finally equalising Borough’s early goal in the 99th minute of the game. Where the referee found 10 minutes of injury time will remain one of life’s mysteries. Putting all that aside, Bere Regis deserved their draw as one can only hope that the reserves had an off day.

Things started off so well with Borough taking the lead in the 5th minute when CHAPPLE charged down a clearance to slot the ball home 1-0 Borough tried to build on the lead but too often their passing went astray, Bere continued to battle forcing NASH to make a couple of good saves near half time. Just before half time WOLDON had a goal ruled out for offside.

H.T 1-0

Into the second half and the pattern of the game followed the first with little fluent play from Borough only matched by Bere’s tenacity. Two good chances, one for CHAPPLE and one for WOLDON went begging, this summed up the day when it appeared easier to score. Bere started pressing more and more into the game and only good defensive work from ATKINS and PHILLIPS prevented a goal. With the game deep into injury time a Bere Regis corner was half cleared only for the ball to fall at their forward's feet, he thumped the ball into the net giving NASH no chance 1-1 There was barely time to restart before the ref blew up for full time.

A disappointed GILES stated after the game that "We need to learn from the mistakes made in this game and put them right for the visit of Holt" to sum it up, "It was one of those days"

Dorset Division 3 North & East
Saturday 30th November 2002

This was always going to be a tight affair as both sides started the match with un defeated records, with that in mind it was to the Reserves credit that they secured a well deserved victory, after their 4 week lay off, with another solid team performance, once again showing their battling qualities to come from behind to win the game. Borough settled quickly and in the 5th minute took the lead when a cross from NORTH found its way to CHAPPLE who volleyed home giving the Shaftesbury keeper no chance 1-0 For the next 20 minutes Borough continued to probe but to no avail as good chances went begging for WOLDON and CHAPPLE. Shaftesbury started to get in to the game more and more with some excellent passages of play and it was in the 37th minute that they drew level following a good 6 man move that carved the Borough defence in half, this resulted in NASH having no chance at all in making a save as the Shaftesbury forward slotted home 1-1 Right on half time, Borough had a great chance to regain the lead but CHAPPLE’S free kick cannoned back of the bar and away to safety.

H.T 1-1

The second half started with Shaftesbury taking the game to Borough as they pressed forward in search of the lead, 4 minutes in and a shot wickedly richoched of WHEATCROFT and into the net 1-2 this clearly rattled Borough as Shaftesbury poured forward, only a top save from NASH prevented any further change to the scoreline. With just over a third of the game to go, Borough got themselves back into the game when WOLDON cut in from the right to score with a cross shot 2-2 this evidently rattled Shaftesbury as they visibly tired on the Turlin Moor pitch, Borough kept pressing with good chances going close for CHAPPLE, WOLDON and CONSTABLE.The winner came with 5 minutes to go when NORTH swept forward to fire a shot into the roof of the net, what a finish 3-2 The final few minutes were marred when the referee sent of 3 players for differing offences, PHILLIPS was sent off for Borough for a late challenge after already being carded in the first half. In the following melee 2 Shaftesbury players also received their marching orders.

JAIMIE TOWNSEND received the man of the match award following his outstanding performance in defence, although once again the whole side deserves credit for their "never say die attitude."

Match Abandoned 45 minutes - Waterlogged Pitch

The reserves have to face the long trip west all over again as the referee saw fit to abandon this lively encounter at half time, in his view the pitch was becoming more un playable and as players safety is paramount he erred on the side of caution.

The football played in the half by Borough was very good considering the torrential rain and very prominent slope on the Charmouth pitch. Changes were enforced on the reserves after various players pulled out of the squad in the morning, they lined up with MACKENZIE in goal and NASH, the normal custodian, playing up front, these 2 players were to play a big part in the 2 goals, both scored by NASH following long kicks by MACKENZIE. Other players to shine !!! were SHANLEY and WHEATCROFT who both looked solid at the back, 1 concern on the day was a knee injury to ATKINS, lets hope he will be fit again soon.

Borough Scorers : Flooks 2, Phillips, Woldon

With the opposition turning up late, the official referee crying off, this was not going to be an ordinary match, and so it proved with a strange affair resulting in 2 incredulous decisions by the stand in referee and 3 more points in the bag for the Borough. The opening exchanges were probing for both sides until the 7th minute when HANDLEY were awarded a penalty for a challenge by a Borough defender, PHILLIPS that had nothing wrong with it, even the HANDLEY players stood in utter disbelief at the award. The penalty was dispatched calmly 0-1 this clearly rattled Borough as they swarmed forward in search of an equaliser that duly arrived on the quarter hour mark when FLOOKS headed in from a corner 1-1 Two minutes later and Borough were in the lead when a long free kick by NASH was nodded on by CURTIS into the path of FLOOKS who scored 2-1 Further chances were created but not taken by Borough. In the 40 th minute, a rash challenge from TOWNSEND resulted in no complaints as the referee correctly, this time, awarded another spot kick for HANDLEY, this time though NASH pulled off a great save to preserve Boroughs lead going into the break.

H.T 2-1

The Borough players responded to their managers request to kill the game off in the opening 20 minutes of the half with their best passage of play when they totally dominated proceedings, 6 minutes in and after good work by CONSTABLE saw PHILLIPS convert a low cross 3-1 minutes later it was 4 when a great through ball from CURTIS saw WOLDON round the keeper to convert 4-1 After this, Borough settled down to playing possesion football with the occasional threat to the Handley goal, only a great goal line clearance from TOWNSEND kept HANDLEYS total to 1. Things turned nasty in the 65th minute when the HANDLEY number 5 , who had been dirty all game, left his studs in on TOWNSEND after the ball had gone, words were exchanged, and again to everyone's surprise the referee sent TOWNSEND from the field of play and only cautioned the HANDLEY player. To confirm JAIMIES innocence in the matter, the HANDLEY player manager apologised to Borough for his players reckless behaviour and offered his support to JAIMIE. This gesture from him and his players was greatly appreciated. Further efforts late on by COLLYER and CONSTABLE went close, but no further goals were added.

ADAM NASH collected the man of the match award for his display between the sticks.

Borough Scorers : Chappell 3, Woldon, Phillips

The reserves picked up another 3 points with, in the end, a well-deserved win away from home. Things could have been so different since Borough gifted Milborne a 2 goal lead inside the opening 15 minutes with some sloppy play. Played on a pleasant day and on a good pitch, Milborne took the game to Borough with their direct style of play, this culminated in the 8th minute when another long ball over the top wasn’t dealt with and their forward converted easily 0-1 Still reeling from the shock of going a goal down, Borough conceded another 4 minutes later from a carbon copy of the 1st goal, another defensive error saw the ball in the net 0-2. Borough slowly got themselves into the game and on the half hour reduced the deficit when WOLDON turned in the box and smashed the ball home 1-2 A clash of heads between WHEATCROFT and a Milborne player saw the Borough player being taken to hospital as a precaution just after the goal was scored. The final few minutes of the half saw ATKINS and MORRELL go close with the opposition's keeper pulling of 2 great saves, the later after CHAPPLE had hit the post.

H.T 1-2

After a stern talk at half time, it was imperative that Borough scored an equaliser early in the half, this duly arrived 5 minutes in, when CHAPPELL finished with a good shot. 2-2 minutes later, after further good work from FLOOKS, saw CHAPPELL run through to give Borough the lead 3-2 Borough by this stage of the match were dominating with a CURTIS header hitting the bar, a couple of chances for FLOOKS going close, however it wasn’t until the 72 minute that Borough increased their lead with a good individual goal from PHILLIPS who went on a run, beat 2 players and scored with a shot that hit the roof of the net 4-2 A minute later and CHAPPELL completed a well deserved hat trick when he was in the right place to convert after the keeper had parried a FLOOKS effort 5-2 In the final few minutes the bar came to Milborne’s rescue twice when good efforts by COLLYER and MORRELL hit the woodwork.

The supporters awarded TOM ALLEN with their man of the match award, whilst MOZZY, whose help on the day was greatly appreciated, gave LAURIE NORTH his man of the match award.

MOZZY was delighted with the battling qualities of the reserves and their overall play, with certain players catching his eye !!!

Borough Scorers : Chappell 2, Atkins, Phillips

Boro went into this game having not lost a league game since the second game of last season and were determined to make it another win after their good start to this season.Atkins, Chapple(2), Philips were the scorers in this game. Boro never really looked in trouble against the team that currently occupies the bottom place in the league. Special mention goes to RICKY SMITH who was awarded the man of the match award for his performance, and also to LAURIE NORTH for another excellent performance.

Saturday 5th October 2002

Borough Scorers : Flooks 3, Woldon,

Another excellent reserve performance saw Borough ease into the next round after seeing off a spirited Swanage side who could not cope with the large pitch at Turlin Moor. Being the first ever game the reserves had played on the new pitch it was no surprise that they took time to get used to the surface. 15 minutes in and after a good crossfield ball by ARNOLD (making a welcome return) saw MORRELL cross for FLOOKS to volley home 1-0 Swanage hit back instantly and only a goal line clearance from ATKINS prevented the visitors from equalising. The game flowed with Borough creating the better chances and in the 40th minute FLOOKS made it 2 with a crisp shot 2-0 he could of had his hat trick by half time but blasted over minutes before the whistle blew.

H.T 2-0

Borough looked sluggish at the start of the second half as Swanage pressed forward and to their credit they reduced the arrears with 7 minutes gone when a smart shot resulted in the ball going in 2-1 this jolt woke the reserves up as they started to play some of their best football of the match, with a quarter of the half gone FLOOKS was fouled in the box for a penalty, FLOOKS stepped up to score 3-1 this goal knocked the stuffing out of Swanage as they sat back and let Borough attack at will.Good efforts by NORTH, ATKINS and WOLDON went close with the latter finally getting on the scoresheet in the 78th minute when WOLDON rounded the keeper to score 4-1 more chances were created in the final few minutes but ATKINS and CURTIS were thwarted by the keeper.

LAURIE NORTH picked up the man of the match award for a very impressive days play.

Borough Scorers : Flooks 5, Townsend, Morrell, Woldon, Collyer

The reserves picked up another 3 points with an emphatic hammering of a woeful Stur side. It was in the 1st minute that the floodgates opened when the referee awarded a penalty for handball, up stepped TOWNSEND to make it 1-0 chances came and went with Boroughs attacking play totally dominating proceedings. FLOOKS and new signing WOLDON could have had 2 goals apiece before a great through ball from ATKINS was calmly slotted home by FLOOKS to make it 2-0 in the 28th minute. On the half hour mark and the post came to Sturs rescue again from another good turn and shot by FLOOKS. With half time approaching a straight run from midfield by MORRELL saw him slot home for 3-0 he was to take no further part in the game due to an injury sustained whilst scoring.

HT 3-0

Into the second half and Borough kept up the momentum shown in the first half, quick efforts from NORTH and SMITH ,another new signing, went close. 10 minutes in and FLOOKS smashed home for 4-0 following good work by SMITH, 1 minute later it was 5 after WOLDON robbed the keeper to convert, 5-0 Borough kept pushing forward and soon it was 6-0 after another good finish from FLOOKS, who claimed his hat trick. With 20 minutes of the half gone and following some good play by COLLYER, who was unlucky not to score himself, saw the ball run to FLOOKS to tap home 7-0 Sturminster offered little but to their credit never let their heads drop even after COLLYER scored his first and Boroughs next goal on 75 minutes with a cross shot 8-0 The bar came to Sturs rescue next when a back header caught the keeper out, the ball rebounded away for a corner. With 1 minute to go, a terrible goal kick by the visiting keeper saw FLOOKS claim his 5th of the day and Boroughs 9th when he cheekily rounded the keeper 9-0.

The whole side deserves credit for their performance, DAN FLOOKS picked up the man of the match award, both new signings, AARON WOLDON and RICKY SMITH impressed on their debuts with their all round play and energy levels, not bad when you consider they are both 15 years of age!!!!

Linthorpe (1) 1.
Poole Borough Reserves (2) 3.

Dorset Division 3 N&E
Saturday 14th September 2002

Borough Scorers : Flooks 2, Chappell

The reserves picked up 3 points with a well-deserved win against a very tall Linthorpe side who seemed intent on the "long ball" game to try and score. After receiving the news that this would be ATKINS last match as manager the reserves took to the field determined to give him a good send off. With a new formation and 2 more new signings, WHEATCROFT in defence and CHAPPELL upfront, Borough settled quickly and soon had Linthorpe on the back foot, after only 2 minutes the 2 new boys combined to see CHAPPELLS shot rebound into the path of FLOOKS who calmly slotted home. 1-0 Further chances were created but not taken,Linthorpes first real attack resulted in a shot just over, Borough’s second goal arrived on the quarter hour mark following a long kick by NASH, one bounce and FLOOKS slotted home his second. 2-0 More chances came and went as Borough sat back more and more as the half progressed, with only a few minutes to go till half time Linthorpe mounted their best move of the match, this saw a shot come back of NASH to land at the forwards feet. 2-1

The second half started with Linthorpe pressing forward but sound defending by ATKINS,BARTON and WHEATCROFT saw NASH rarely troubled, when he was, the keeper made some fine saves. With 15 minutes gone in the half Borough earned themselves a corner which was duly converted by CHAPPELL to increase the lead 3-1 This appeared to knock the stuffing out of Linthorpe who resulted to petty, niggly fouls which spoilt the game.To Boroughs credit they kept their cool very well.More chances fell to Borough notably NORTH,FLOOKS and CONSTABLE with the latter bringing a good save out of the Linthorpe keeper.A mix up between ATKINS and NASH saw a back header hit the post as that was the closest Linthorpe came to reducing the arrears.

A good "team" display by Borough gave a fitting send off to ATKINS as the whole side deserves credit for their performance.WHEATCROFT on his debut received the man of the match award for his show at the heart of the defence, further plus points were the performance of the other new signing CHAPPELL,and the all round play of MORRELL, FLOOKS and CONSTABLE.

Poole Borough Reserves (1) 2,
Allendale 'A' (2) 2.

Dorset Division 3 N&E
Saturday 7th September 2002

Borough Scorers : Collyer, Hebdon

The reserves kicked off their Division 3NE campaign with draw against a very workmanlike Allendale side. Played at the reserves "new" home pitch on Branksome rec. Poole Borough’s first 35 minutes was a shambles as they failed to find any cohesion, marking was non existent and passing was not evident as Allendale pressed forward on numerous occasions.Allendale took the lead in the 12th minute when the defence did not clear a long ball and after a ricochet the ball was in the net 0-1 this clearly rattled Borough as mistakes were evident all over the pitch, it was from another mistake that Allendale increased their lead on 26 when their forward nipped in to score 0-2. Finally this jolt seemed to wake Borough up as they mounted their first real attempt on goal which resulted in ATKINS hitting the bar. With 5 minutes to go till half time a flowing move started by ALLEN saw COLLYER nip in to score 1-2.Just before half time Borough lost their keeper MACKENZIE to a knee injury, he was replaced by NASH, who was making his debut.

Into the second half, and after some stern words, Borough took the game to Allendale and slowly got on top, good efforts by COLLYER,NORTH and ALLEN went close, only a good save by Nash, diving at the feet of an Allendale forward prevented a further goal. With 10 minutes to go, another good move for Borough resulted in HEBDON receiving the ball 25 yards out, seconds later it was in the net after a superb shot from distance 2-2, Borough pressed forward for the winner, the bar came to Allendale’s rescue, again, from ATKINS, who had the last chance of the match.

A 2-2 result was creditable considering the poor start and it was to the Reserves credit that they battled away and never let their heads down, CONSTABLE received the man of the match award with a hard working performance in the middle. Other plus points for the Reserves were the performances of the new boys WEBB,COLLYER,BARTON and NASH.
