Swanage Town & Herston (0) 1,
Poole Borough (2) 6. Dorset Premier League Saturday 26th October 2002 Borough
Scorers : Alan Fooks 33, 43, 82, Shaun Clarke 78,
Dan Herrington 88, James Edwards 90. Veteran striker Alan Fooks recorded a hat trick for Borough on his return to Swanage, the club were he starred for 18 seasons, as he led the Hornets to their second Dorset Premier away victory. The score line, however, flattered the Hornets, who despite going into the second half with a 2-0 lead, saw Swanage pull a goal back, and they had to defend desperately for 20 minutes to maintain the lead before finally securing the win in style. Borough created a number of early chances and on 5 minutes Dan Herrington cut in from the left and unleased a drive which was pushed past the post by the home keeper. From the resulting corner Herrington was again foiled by the keeper as his header was pushed over the bar. Five minutes later Alan Fooks broke through but again the keeper did well to block at close quarters. Borough, however were unable to build on their bright opening and although continuing to dominate play were not able to carve out the same chances as before. Swanage meanwhile began to look dangerous on the break and after a number of half chances could have opened the scoring on 30 minutes as a low shot flashed just wide of the Paul Maitland's right hand post. On 33 minutes Borough finally took the lead when a James Edwards free-kick was knocked into the path of Alan Fooks and he made not mistake in tucking the ball past the advancing keeper. Two minutes later, Borough doubled the lead after Matland launched a long drop kick and a terrable mix-up between centre half and keeper at the edge of the area saw them both fail to cut out the kick and Alan Fooks ran through to divert the loose ball over the line. HT 2-0 Borough were guilty of some casual play at the beginning of the second half, and early on Swanage latched on to a mistake in midfield to break through, but Maitland did well to save at full stretch. The Hornets didn't learn from this let off and were punished on 56 minutes as they lost the ball again in midfield and Rob Ley got past the defence and scored with a shot which went in off the post. The young Swans side now sensed the chance to get back in the game and Maitland did well to block another chance which fell to Lay, whilst Craig Shanley was forced to make a last ditch header to deny a forward in front of goal. Borough though slowly took control of the game again as they began to string together some good passing moves forcing their opponents work for the ball. Shaun Clarke came on and made an immediate impact on 77 minutes, hitting a low shot which flew just wide and a minute later he restored the two goal lead as he ran on to a loose ball and hit a screaming drive from 30 yards out, into the top corner. Within five minutes the Swans resistance came to an end as Alan Fooks got his third, the home keeper presenting him with a tap in after he mis-kicked a back pass. Ricky Smith came on for his debut and was joined by Danny Chappell with both young forwards slotting in well. With two minutes to go Herrington got Borough's fifth with a superbly placed free kick from the edge of the area and just before the final whistle Edwards was on hand to poke the ball home after a goal mouth scramble. Borough : Paul Maitland, James Edwards, Mark Reeks, Sean Hebdon, Craig Shanley (Ricky Smith 78), Dan Herrington, Alex Gunn, Matt Bircumshaw, Scott Arnold, Alan Fooks (Danny Chappell 82), Gary Fooks (Shaun Clarke 73). Manager's Quotes.......... Winning manager Pete Morrell said: "We were disgraceful to be honest. We thought all we had to do was turn up - there was a few harsh words at half-time I can tell you. I brought on two substitutes and they changed the game really. "We had a major chat after the match. I would rather we win 1-0 and play well than win 6-1 and play poorly. The lads will match any of the top sides because they are up for it but against the lower teams our attitudes are all wrong. We think we are going to walk it and you cannot think like that in this league. " Swans' boss Terry White said: "We were the better side in the second half up until the 70th minute. We just ran out of energy and everything else after they scored their third. We gifted them a 2-0 lead in the first half really. Our keeper George Harvey made some good saves but he lost his confidence at the end." |
