Borough Man of the Match:
Martin White

After a traumatic week for Borough following the decision to part company with manager Peter Morrell, the Hornets responded with a positive performance against near neighbours Cobham Sports at Turlin Moor where if chances had been converted they could have finished with a much more comfortable win.

Inside 10 minutes James Edwards jinked into the area but his shot was blocked by Ollie Singleton in the visitors goal and Shaun Clarke put a bullet header from a corner just over the bar.

Edwards set up Steve Russell with a perfectly weighted through ball on 27 minutes, but Singleton came out quickly to narrow the angle and the resulting shot went just wide. A minute later Singleton was called on again to block a low shot from Russell.

Borough finally opened the scoring on 32 minutes when Jamie Wilson won the ball on the left-hand edge of the area before cutting inside and dispatching a well-placed shot just inside the far post. A minute later Borough were awarded a hotly disputed penalty after the referee saw a push in the area and Edwards stepped up to register his 7th goal of the season.

Cobham came back with their best spell of the half and came close with a header from a free kick which went just wide of the post but further Borough chances from both Matt Bircumshaw and Gary Fooks also went wide.

Half Time 2-0.

Immediately after the break the home side should have increased their lead further after Matt Bircumshaw's shot struck Borough's Steve Russell on the line and the striker was unable to turn the loose ball in.

Borough were playing some excellent passing football and from quick break forward down the right Bircumshaw squared the ball to Russell at the edge of the area but a defender got back quickly to charge the resulting shot down. A minute later Edwards sent the ball into the path on Russell cutting in from the left and he lifted his shot over the advancing Singleton but it fell agonisingly wide.

Cobham, however looked threatening on the break and pulled a goal back on 68 minutes as Jamie Edwards converted a left wing cross. Again a minute later Russell was thwarted by Singleton who palmed away a close range effort.

Kieran Campbell came off the bench and put the opposition defence under pressure with some battling breaks down the right but once more Borough were unable to capitalise on the resulting crosses.

And with time running out Sports nearly nicked an equaliser when ex-Hornet legend Alan Fooks found himself clear on the edge of the area but he was unable to get full power on the ball and Adam Nash collected the shot low to his right.

Borough tightened up to ensure Cobham were offered no further opportunities and Campbell put a late shot just wide but the Hornets had done enough to earn a deserved win for caretaker manager Tony White.

Borough: Adam Nash, Shaun Clarke (Scott Orchard 78), Tony White, Martin White, Jamie Wilson, Stuart Merrell, James Edwards, Gary Fooks (Dougie Hay 81), Matt Bircumshaw (Kieran Campbell 62) Alex Gunn, Steve Russell.
