Hamworthy United (2) 3, Poole Borough (1) 2. Elite Teamware Dorset Premier League Wednesday 7th January 2004 Borough Scorers: Kieran
Campbell 12, Tony White 55. Borough can feel disappointed not to have come away from the County Ground with a point in a match which at times was a great example of a pulsating local derby but was unfortunately spoilt by some bad tackles some of which went unpunished and consequently resulted in the game degenerating into a bad tempered affair. The Hornets shocked the home support with the opening goal after 12 minutes when James Edwards stole the ball wide on the left touchline before sending over a low cross for Kieran Campbell at the near post to convert against his old club. Hamworthy pushed forward and Borough had to defend desperately to clear two goal mouth scrambles whilst the referee also played his part, awarding the home side a series of free-kicks and on 27 minutes when Jamie Holland took a tumble in the area he had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Tom McCormack stepped up to equalise, sending Adam Nash the wrong way. Five minutes later Nash did well to parry a shot over the bar, but from the resulting corner Tom Rossiter gave the Hammers the lead with a near post header. Towards the end of the half Borough began to take the initiative and Dan Herrington came close after a strong run from the half-way line with a shot which went just past the post. Half Time 2-1 Borough continued to take the game to their hosts after the break and on 55 minutes deservedly equalised as from the edge of the area Campbell laid the ball back to Tony White who hit a blistering shot which took a slight deflection to beat the home keeper. Campbell came close to giving Borough the lead again when he hit a shot from the right hand edge of the area which went narrowly wide, but it was the Hammers who broke the deadlock once more, winning the ball wide on the left before executing a swift cross field move which resulted in Rossitor collecting the ball in the the area and Darren Lawrence nipped in front of Nash to convert the resulting cross. Borough battled forward looking for a way back and produced some excellent probing approach play and appeared more than capable of drawing level again. Hamworthy were restricted to break-aways, but from one incident Borough had Nash to thank for an excellent save, narrowing the angle before diverting the shot past the post. Into the last 5 minutes the home keeper dropped a deep cross from Gary Fooks but the ball was scrambled clear for a corner and Tony White also sent a teasing ball into the box which the gloveman just managed to clear under pressure from Danny Chapple. With time running out Sean Hebdon was fouled inside his own half and with the perpetrator them lashing out and kicking the Borough defender in the face. However neither referee of linesman appeared to see the incident and unfortunately when the game restarted, Hebdon decided to take retribution himself and was duly sent-off. Tony White was also booked as Borough lost their momentum for the remaining few minutes and the final whistle left bragging rites even the South-West corner of Poole. Borough: Nash, Herrington (Chapple 75), T.White, Orchard, Hebdon, M.White, Edwards, Fooks, Campbell, Bircumshaw, Russell (Wilson 82). Unused sub: Gunn |
