Holt United (1) 1, Poole Borough (1) 1. Elite Teamware Dorset Premier League Saturday 11th October 2003 Scorer: Derrant
Blenman 36. Borough's improved form continued as they earned a well deserved draw to end a run of four consecutive league wins by the Bulls at Petersham Lane. Derrant Blenman came close for Borough after only 6 minutes with a shot which beat the advancing Dale Chambers in the home goal but rolled agonisingly wide. Chambers made a good block from Alex Gunn 10 minutes later, but in between Kevin Blackham had four chances to open the scoring for the Bulls but was off target each time. Further home pressure saw Dave Dick shoot wide on 33 minutes after a four man move and a minute later Holt's Simon Freak saw a shot cannon off the crossbar. Borough however took the lead on 36 minutes when Dan Herrington sent over a teasing left wing cross and Blenman nipped in front of Chambers to head over the stranded keeper. Steve Russell nearly put the Hornets further ahead on 39 minutes when his header from a free kick went narrowly wide, but Borough had keeper Adam Nash to thank for four fine saves within 5 minutes, blocking a shot from Freak with his legs, clearing the ball when 1 on 1 with a home striker and then producing a superb double save. Dick however put the home side level in first half stoppage time, winning the ball outside the area before converting just inside the right hand post. Half Time 1-1. Attacking their favoured end down the slope in the second period, Holt had the majority of the early play but produced little to test Nash who was equal to the long rang efforts produced. As the half progressed Borough had their share of possession but we unable to carve out any clear chances. With 15 minutes remaining, however, Holt stepped up the pressure and Dick should have done better with a shot which went wide and another chance went the wrong side of the post after Borough struggled to clear in the area. Nash came to Boroughs rescue again on 83 minutes as he arrived at his left hand post to block an effort from Freak. Borough had the ball in the net in the final minutes Stuart Merrell converting after some battling approach lay by substitute Keith Whatling and although the goal was ruled out offside, the Hornets were still pleased with a point at the final whistle. Borough: Adam Nash, Shaun Clarke (Doug Hay 61), Dan Herrington, Martin White, Stuart Merrell, James Edwards, Alex Gunn (Jamie Wilson 71), Derrant Blenman (Keith Whatling 89), Kieron Campbell, Steve Russell.
Managers Comments .............................. Holt manager Steve Norman said: "I have never seen a game where a team made so many openings and did not win. We made ten easy chances and I have got a feeling that game could come back to haunt us later on." Borough boss Peter Morrell said: "We got out of jail really. They created chance after chance and it was just a case of us holding on. They played three up front and went for it and we did get a bit stretched." |
