Holt United (0) 1 - 2, Poole Borough (0) 1 - 1. (after extra time) Dorset Senior Cup Saturday 4th October 2003 Scorers: Holt -
Freak 77, Dick 93; Borough - Campbell 72. A Dave Dick extra time goal separated the sides as Holt progressed to the second round of the Dorset Senior Cup. Borough had the best of the first half chances and Kieron Campbell had the ball in the net after 8 minutes but the goal was disallowed due to a foul during the build up. Holt came close on 27 minutes as they broke down the left but the resulting cross alluded two forwards in the area. A minute later Derrant Blenman was put through but Dale Chambers in the home goal came out quickly to clear. On 32 minutes Chambers parried a James Edwards shot and recovered well to deny Campbells' effort from the rebound. Minutes later Adam Nash did well to save with his legs for Borough, but Chambers was again in action and could only parry a shot from Alex Gunn, but Campbell put the rebound over the bar. Just before the break the home keeper again did well to deflect an Edwards far post header past the post. Half Time: 0-0. Holt benefited from the slope after the break and pushed Borough back with their swift forward play before being awarded a penalty for a trip in the area on 60 minutes but Dick's spot kick came back off the bar. Borough took advantage of the let off as they began to stamp their authority on the game again and took the lead on 73 minutes when Campbell collected a forward pass from Edwards on the edge of the area before turning well and dispatching his shot just inside the post. Holt however were level within 5 minutes as Simon Freak cut into the area from wide on the right and after his initial cross was deflected off a Borough defender he dispatched the rebound from a tight angle. The home side created the best of the remaining chances in normal time including having a goal disallowed for a foul on Nash. Full Time : 1-1. Into extra time and Dick put the Bulls in the lead after only 3 minutes, heading home a left wing cross at the far post. Borough pushed forward in numbers looking to stay in the tie and Holt were forced to clear chances off the line from Campbell and Stuart Merrell as well as seeing Edwards put two late chances narrowly over the bar before the end. Borough: Adam Nash, Shaun Clarke, Tony White, Dan Herrington, Martin White, Stuart Merrell, James Edwards, Alex Gunn, Derrant Blenman (Gary Fooks 84), Kieron Campbell, Steve Russell. Unused subs: Jamie Wilson, Matt Norris.
Manager's Comments.................... The Bulls' boss Steve Norman said: "It was a tough game against a good side. They probably had the best of the first half but at the start of the second we began to put them under a bit of pressure. In extra-time we continued to be the better side and I thought we deserved to just about edge it." Losing-manager Pete Morrell said: "We played well to be fair and possession wise I thought we had more of the game. Chance for chance it could have ended up 6-6 and to be honest it was a bit disappointing. They are up there in the league and they are a good side but I look at the score over 90 minutes and it was 1-1 which is very pleasing." |
