Dorchester United Reserves (0) 0,
Poole Borough Reserves (3) 7.
Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 13th March 2004

The team travelled to Avenue Road to take on Dorchester United Reserves and with Giles hoping to bolster the goal difference he wasn't disappointed as the lads chalked up an impressive victory and played some great football in the process.

Dorchester were defending the first half against a stiff breeze and conceded an early goal when Danny Herrington whipped in a curling right wing corner which a home defender could only help in a the far post. Kieron Campbell scored the second soon after, stooping to head low into the bottom right hand corner and Darren Abreu put Borough three up before the break as he converted a right wing cross.

Half Time 0-3.

Carl Griffin increased the lead early in the second half with a shot from the edge of the area, before Campbell scored his second with an excellent strike to dispatch an inch perfect left wing cross from Danny Moore. Moore found space himself to score the sixth before the old warhorse Lee Atkins came off the bench to register the final goal after beating the offside trap and dribbling past the keeper he was left to coolly walk the ball into the net.

Poole Borough Reserves (0) 1,
Weymouth Spartans (1) 1.
Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 6th March 2004

The reserves suffered a setback on their title hopes when Spartans held them to a 1-1 draw at Branksome Rec. The visitors took a first half lead following a disputed penalty, but a second half equaliser by Mark Vincent saw Borough take a share of the points.

Poole Borough Reserves (1) 3,
Holt United Reserves (0) 0.
Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 17th January 2004

The reserves had to wait a full month between fixtures and Holt were the visitors after a hastily rearranged game, following the failure of Sherborne to raise a side. Borough, however didn't allow the long break to affect them as they came out on top when goals from Dan Chapple, Mark Vincent and Mike Constable seeing the team home through. The only disappointing aspect of the game was the fact that the “Borough” created a hatful of chances that went begging, however at the other end they have now equaled their record of three consecutive clean sheets.

Poole Borough Reserves (3) 4,
Wool RBL (0) 0.
Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 20th December 2003

With an emphatic 4-0 score line, it would appear that Borough dominated the game, but for long periods in the first half, Borough struggled to get to grips with the Wool mid field as they were continually pegged back only to score on the counter attack. Played in blustery conditions, the game sparked to life when after 23 seconds CHAPPLE latched onto a through ball from VINCENT to steer the ball past the Wool keeper 1-0 this should of settled Borough but it was Wool who took the game on, in the 5th minute a Wool shot went narrowly wide, minutes later and SHEAR had to be alert to save smartly. 18 minutes gone and MOORE had a free header from a free kick that went close, Wool continued to press forward and were again unlucky on the half hour when SHEAR collected comfortably from a header, minutes later and after a long ball out of the Borough half, CHAPPLE collected and ran at the Wool goal to smash home his and Borough’s second of the match 2-0 Back came Wool, when in the 40th minute MOORE headed off his own line to deny the forward a goal, with time running out in the half, Borough were awarded a free kick wide out on the left, VINCENT floated the ball in for WHATLING to head goal wards only to see MOORE, on his debut, ram the ball home 3-0

HALF TIME 3-0

If the half time score somewhat flattered Borough due to their first half performance they certainly deserved the plaudits with their second half showing, which showed resolve and a desire to keep a clean sheet. The half started slowly with both sides content to cancel each other out, 49 minutes in and SHANLEY broke clear only to drag his shot wide. Chances came and went for both sides as Borough took control FLOOKS, WHATLING and MOORE all had good chances whilst the defence ably dealt with Wool’s efforts. With 10 minutes to go Borough earned another corner, which resulted in the ball falling to WHATLING who smashed the ball high into the net 4-0 Back came Wool who so nearly scored a consolation when a defensive mix up saw the Wool forward mis kick with the goal at his mercy, minutes later ASAGBA was clean through only to see his shot saved, into the final minute and the bar came to Borough’s rescue following another header from the Wool forward.

GILES praised his players for their efforts which now see the team rise to 3rd in the table, DAN MOORE received the man of the match award for a great debut but MARK VINCENT and DANNY YOUNG were also singled out for their efforts.

All that remains is to wish all my players, backroom staff, the commitee and you the supporters a happy Christmas and prosperous new year, thank you for all your efforts so far this season and here’s to 2004 - Giles.

Sturminster Newton United Reserves (0) 0,
Poole Borough Reserves (2) 3,
Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 6th December 2003

Borough maintained their recent good form with a well deserved win at Sturminster with a battling performance, especially from the defence who stood up well to sustained pressure in the second half only to go and secure the win in the final few minutes. The opening exchanges were tight with no real threat on either goal, ASAGBA had a shot comfortably saved in the 9th minute, Sturminster’s first real chance came minutes later, but their forward shot wide. 15 minutes in and a long ball into the Sturminster box caused panic for the home defence, this culminated in a defender putting the ball into his own net 1-0 The game continued to ebb and flow, SHANLEY had 2 chances that were squandered, SHEAR had to be alert in the 27th minute to tip over a dipping shot. Minutes later and it was 2 for Borough, as another ball from GRIFFIN deceived the home keeper when he mis judged the bounce only to see the ball go over his head, CHAPPLE was on hand to convert 2-0 Back came Sturminster with SHEAR diving bravely at the feet of an on coming forward, with half time looming Sturminster mounted their best move of the match which resulted in a spectacular volley just going over.

HALF TIME 2-0

The second half followed the same pattern as the first with chances falling to both teams, Sturminster kept pushing only to be thwarted by SHEAR and his defence, as the game drew on it started to get niggly as Sturminster’s frustrations started to boil over, chances came for HEBDON and CHAPPLE but both efforts went close, with 85 minutes on the clock SHEAR pulled of a magnificent finger tip save to deny the un lucky forward, back came Borough and following a great ball from new signing VINCENT, CHAPPLE coolly rounded the keeper to slot home 3-0 so claiming the victory.

DOUG SHEAR received a well deserved bottle of wine for his impressive performance, but any number of players could of received the man of the match award as all the Borough players showed the desire to win and more importantly to keep a clean sheet.

Weymouth Spartans (2) 2,
Poole Borough Reserves (1) 2,
Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 22nd November 2003

Playing against our old friends, Borough did more than enough in the second half to come away from a rain swept Weymouth with all 3 points, alas it was not to be as bad finishing and good goalkeeping prevented a well deserved win.

The game started brightly with both sides intent on playing neat football, which was a credit to both sides considering the conditions, good attacking play from HEBDON saw his shot pushed away for a corner in the 12th minute. 3 minutes later and Borough took the lead when a free kick was floated into the Spartans box, up rose WHATLING to head home 1-0 ATKINS had the chance to increase the lead in the 23rd minute but his shot was well wide, minutes later and ATKINS was fouled which resulted in LEE being taken to hospital, this appeared to un settle Borough and following a handling error from SHEAR, HEBDON fouled the Spartans forward in the box with a move he had obviously picked up from watching the rugby world cup final earlier in the day !!! The resultant penalty was converted 1-1 Spartans increased their lead minutes later when a flowing move down their left saw the cross neatly converted 1-2 Borough’s reply was to go on the attack and chances came and went for HEBDON and WOLDON who both combined well together.

HALF TIME 1-2

The second half saw Borough pour forward at every chance so keeping Spartans on their back foot, 47 minutes in and a good HEBDON shot was pushed onto the post by the Spartans keeper, WHATLING blazed over in the 50th minute, in the 62nd minute ISON saw his shot blocked on the line, back came Spartans in the 65th minute with a shot that was well saved by SHEAR. With 18 minutes to go, CUFF shot wide from in front of the goal, still Borough pressed forward and eventually in the 74th minute their endeavours paid off when following a neat pass, WOLDON slotted home 2-2. Borough searched for the winner with further efforts from WOLDON and CONSTABLE going close but alas it was not to be.

A philosophical GILES praised his side for their effort and drive but considering the chances that came their way felt it was 2 points dropped against a well organised if not physical Spartans side that offered little in the second half.

SCOTT ISON received the man of the match award for another outstanding display.

Best wishes go to LEE ATKINS for a speedy recovery after his injury was diagnosed as a broken metatarsal in his right foot, LEE will be in plaster for up to 6 weeks and then he will need to have physio before he can get back to playing, he will be sorely missed, still he has always reckoned his shots are like BECKHAMS, now he can be like him !!!! all the best mate, GILO

Poole Borough Reserves (1) 2,
Dorchester United Reserves (1) 1.
Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 15th November 2003

A deserved Borough victory was gained after a close game against a well organised Dorchester side who, for all their passing play offered little up front, Borough settled quickly and good exchanges followed for both sides, the first real chance fell to CHAPPLE who shot over after good work from CONSTABLE. Chances came and went with SHEAR having to be alert in the 30th minute when a Dorchester shot was well saved, 5 minutes later and Borough took the lead when WOLDON capitalised on a mistake to run through and smash the ball home 1-0 The old adage of “The best time to score is when your opponents just have” came true less than 30 seconds later when straight from the kick off Dorchester equalised after a miss tackle in the Borough defence enabled Dorchester’s forward to slot home 1-1

HALF TIME 1-1

The second half followed the same pattern as the first with both sides playing good football, SHEAR again pulling off a good save in the 63rd minute, back came Borough as they slowly took a hold on the game CHAPPLE went close in the 71st minute, WOLDON forcing a great save from the visiting keeper in the 78th minute and CONSTABLE having a shot that went just wide in the 81st. With the game heading for a draw, Borough mounted another attack which culminated in SHANLEY being crudely fouled in the box, the result a penalty for Borough, before the kick could be taken the Dorchester player who committed the offence was shown the red card after a discussion !! with the referee. Up stepped SHANLEY to coolly slot home the penalty 2-1 That’s the way it stayed as the game finished, CUFF went close in the final minute but his cross shot went agonisingly wide.

A delighted GILES commented on the excellent attitude and desire to win from his players and how well they pressed forward till the end, never giving up and finally getting the result they deserved.

KEITH WHATLING received a well-deserved bottle of wine for another outstanding display at the heart of the Borough defence, although there were some excellent performances across the whole pitch that pushed the decision to the end.

West Moors Social Club (3) 3,
Poole Borough Reserves (1) 2.

Dorset Intermediate Cup
Saturday 8th November 2003

Being a county cup match, Borough were deprived of any player who had played even a minute this season in the DPL and were therefore left to field 11 players plus Giles as sub. Within 25 minutes West Moors had raced into a 3-0 lead. Things did not look good but a tactical change saw Borough get back into the game and a well struck volley from SHANLEY reduced the arrears 1-3 Borough continued to press forward, WOLDON and CHAPPLE both going close before half time.

Half Time 1-3

Strong words in the interval appeared to hit home as the second half was dominated by the Borough, with after 50 minutes ASAGBA going close after a mazy run. Mid way through the half, CHAPPLE further reduced the arrears with a well taken goal 2-3. Borough poured forward, West Moors were reduced to 10 men after a sending off but alas the comeback was not to be, further chances came and went with SHANLEY’S shot drawing a top class save from the opposition goalkeeper. FT 2-3

LEE ATKINS received a well-deserved bottle of wine for his performance in the heart of the Borough defence.

Poole Borough Reserves (0) 0,
Sturminster United Reserves (1) 1.
Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 1st November 2003

The reserves last home game saw them dominate against a well organised Sturminster Newton side who defended well, Borough had the lion’s share of the game only to squander good chances, meanwhile a deflected shot saw Sturminster take the lead just before half time and ultimately win the game.

Holt United Reserves (0) 0,
Poole Borough Reserves (0) 1.

Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 25th October 2003

Respective positions meant nouthing in this dour battle at Gaunts Common. Borough were forced to battle (in more wats than one) for the points, and it looked like a draw would be the best to ask for when Tom Allen was dismissed for striking an opponent after words were exchanged. However Boro's never say die attitude shone through and Arron Woldon secured all three points with a goal in injury time.

Wool RBL (2) 2,
Poole Borough Reserves (0) 2.

Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 18th October 2003

Boro` started with a different team that beat stourpaine the previous week due to a few illnesses, Atkins went between the sticks as SHEAR had been off work al week, which meant Cuff coming off the bench to replace Atkins on the left of midfield, Colyer back into the squad on the bench after a few weeks out.

The game started slowly but it was Boro` who had the first attack of the half but it came to nothing as Wool defended well to keep the Boro` players at bay. Wool started to get a little more into the game and started to press on a little more, Atkins getting his hand to a shot after the Boro` defence tried to step up for off side.

Boro` seemed to be camped in the Wool half, but it was Wool who took the lead after the Boro` defence tried to step up again for off side only to be thwarted, Atkins came out to close the player down but his cross eluded him and was converted. This lifted Wool, who started to gain momentum as they got another goal before half time after the defence left the ball for Hebdon as he shouted but miss-timed his jump only for the forward to poke the ball home.

Half Time 2-0.

Boro` knew that they needed to play better football and turn all their possesion into goals and about 20 minutes into the second half, their pressure paid off as Asagba converted a cross from Chapple. Boro` had their tails up, the whole of the second half was being played in the Wool half, even more so than the first half, Boro` got their just rewards after all their pressure, in the last minute of the game Chapple was fouled on the edge of the Wool penalty area and with a few players standing over the ball wanting to hit it, Hebbo moved everyone away and just as the keeper had lined up his wall, Hebbo hit it with the outside of his right foot and it flew into the top left hand corner of the net with the keeper standing watching, the Boro` celebrated.

Boro` deserved to take all 3 points in this one sided game but as we keep saying we have to convert our chances more in games that we dominate like we did against Wool. For his superb goal from the free kick, Sean Hebdon was awarded the man of the match award.

Poole Borough Reserves (3) 5,
Stourpaine Reserves (0) 0.

Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 11th October 2003

The reserves got back to winning ways, providing a great display of passing football to record an emphatic home victory. Into the side came Scott Smith, returning from injury and Matt Norris, as Pete Morrell looked for both players to get 90 minutes under their belts to help get them match fit after a spell out of the first team. It was Smith who broke the deadlock after just 5 minutes as he latched onto a through ball and easily slotted home. Boro` then had to wait another 25 minutes until they extended their lead as Danny Chapple, back from injury coolly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper to double the lead. Chapple was in the thick of it again 14 minutes later to score his second after combining well with Smith.

Half Time: 3-0.

Boro` started to play some great football from the back in the second half, passing the ball the through the whole of defence before turning it into an attack, this is what Poole Borough is about, and on 77 minutes this led to Norris scoring to cap off a good performance. The scoring was not over though, just as Chapple came off due to injury, Neil Cuff came off the bench and went left midfield which pushed Lee Atkins up front. No sooner had he got there, the ball was played through the Stourpaine defence and with the back line calling for off side, Atkins continued playing and with two players bearing down on him coolly slotted the ball home. Man of the match was Scott Ison, who was solid at the back along side Sean Hebdon.

Sherborne Town Reserves (0) 1,
Poole Borough Reserves (0) 0.

Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 4th October 2003

Despite a second successive away defeat, Giles was far happier with the team performance which was a marked improvement of the previous weeks performance. Borough probably had 60% of of the possession and a draw would have been a fair result, but Craig Seamark hit the winning goal for the home side mid-way through the second half.

Borough man of the match was new signing Keith Watling.

Chickerell United Reserves (1) 4,
Poole Borough Reserves (1) 1.

Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 27th September 2003

Borough Scorer: Carl Griffin

It would be very easy to blame this defeat on the sloping concrete pitch at Chickerell or on the loss of SHEAR from goal due to a sickening collision of heads that saw the Borough keeper taken by ambulance to hospital when the score was 1-1 but in all truth Borough never deserved anything from the game, they were lethargic and were easily muscled off the ball by a determined Chickerell side that played to their obvious strengths, 2 large forwards, and a game plan of getting the ball forward at all times. To be fair what decent football was played came from Borough as they tried in patches to keep the ball on the deck but to many passes were going astray and the final ball was lacking. Things started off poorly when a long ball over the Borough defence was nodded back only for SHEAR to mis control allowing the Chickerell forward an easy tap in 0-1 Minutes later and it might have been 2 when a dangerous ball in to the box was scrambled clear, CHAPPLE came close in the 15th minute when his shot went narrowly wide. Chances were being made by Borough only for a series of bad misses to cost them, CHAPPLE, ATKINS both had shots that went wide an=d in the 29th minute ISON headed over from a free kick. The game sparked into life when in the 38th minute a crude 2 footed challenge on ATKINS saw a melee which resulted in bookings for the 2 protagonists, from the free kick a cross shot by CHAPPLE was met at the far post by GRIFFIN to ram home for the equaliser 1-1 Just before half time, SHEAR reacted well when he blocked a shot that was destined for the bottom corner.

HALF TIME 1-1

Borough tried to take the game to their opponents at the start of the half with chances for CUFF and CHAPPLE going close, 62minutes in and another long ball down the Borough middle saw 2 attackers go for the ball with SHEAR, the result was a bad clash of heads, after treatment the game continued but minutes later an ambulance was called for SHEAR after concern for his welfare, this held the game up for 25 minutes. When the match restarted Chickerell sensed a chance for a win and poured the ball forward at all times with their long – high – ball game, with 73 minutes gone a back header was cut out and lobbed into the net 1-2 Borough tried in vain to get level and were caught out again in the 88th minute when another back pass was converted into the net 1-3 Finally in the 89th minute a good through ball was not cut out and the Chickerell forward slotted home 1-4

GILES was clearly frustrated by the performance and will be expecting his players to learn from the game and react positively next time out, “we have to learn to come to grounds like Chickerell’s and adapt our style of play to the conditions on the day – alas we did not do this today”

Poole Borough Reserves (2) 4,
Kingston (0) 2.

Dorset County League Division 2
Saturday 20th September 2003

Borough settled quickly to life in Division 2 with a performance that was not their best, but they did enough to easily run out winners. The reserves took the lead in the 3rd minute when a MERRELL free kick was headed home at the far post un opposed by CONSTABLE 1-0 Borough continued to probe, SHEAR pulled off a great save to deny Kingston in the 16th minute, straight from the clearance by ISON, CHAPPLE controlled the ball and calmly slotted home 2-0 Chances were continually created by Borough as Kingston were kept on the back foot for most of the half, CHAPPLE again going close in the 34th minute after good work by FLOOKS. With 41 minutes gone another good chance was well saved by the Kingston keeper from CHAPPLE, minutes later and FLOOKS volleyed over after good work by CONSTABLE, this was to be FLOOK’s last action as he fell awkwardly in the 44th minute, an ambulance was called and DAN was taken to hospital as a precaution.

HALF TIME 2-0

Again Borough started the half well as they took the game to Kingston, BLENHAM going close with a shot, and then after rounding the keeper failing to convert. With 48 minutes gone, a Kingston forward was allowed to reach the by-line un challenged, he centred and the ball was knocked home 2-1 This clearly jolted Borough as for a few minutes they looked decidedly ropey as Kingston threatened, YOUNG had to be alert to clear in the 50th minute. Borough soon got normal service resumed when after good work by CONSTABLE and CHAPPLE saw the latter’s cross met by BLENHAM to convert 3-1 Further chances came and went as a mixture of poor finishing and lucky defending kept the score down. 77 minutes in and a great cross by CUFF was again converted by BLENHAM to increase the lead 4-1 Minutes later and Kingston were awarded a penalty when YOUNG fouled in the box, up stepped their taker to convert 4-2 The remainder of the game petered out with SHEAR superbly saving a one on one situation which might of bought the scores closer.
DANNY CHAPPLE received a well-deserved man of the match award.

GILES was delighted with the win, especially as he felt it was achieved with a performance from his side not really playing to their full potential, but they did enough to get the 3 points, which starts the campaign off well.

Update on Danny he went to hospital where he has suffered knee ligament damage but thankfully it was not as serious as first feared, we hope to have Danny back in 2/3 weeks and we wish him a speedy recovery.
