Sherborne Town (0) 0, Poole Borough (0) 1. Elite Teamware Dorset Premier League Saturday 3rd January 2004 Borough Scorers: Gary
Fooks 81 Borough took their winning run to four consecutive games after producing a battling performance at Sherborne, capped by a superb strike from Gary Fooks nine minutes from time to give the Hornets all three points. Goal attempts were limited in the first half, the best chance for the home side came on 13 minutes when Borough keeper Adam Nash came out quickly to deflect a close range shot after a home forward broke through on the left. From the subsequent corner the Hornets defence had to fight hard to clear a goal mouth scramble, blocking three shots in the process. For Borough Steve Russell forced a smart save from home gloveman Darren Walkey on 32 minutes after Jamie Wilson did well to cut in cut in from the left and beat two defenders before squaring the ball. Half Time: 0-0 Borough made a double substitution at the start of the second half with Kieron Campbell adding some height to the front line while Sean Hebdon replaced the injured Dan Herrington at the back. However Sherborne started the stronger and forced a succession of corners, which Borough weee forced to defend in numbers. Borough fought back and on 54 minutes Scott Orchard sent a teasing ball into the area and Martin White turned smartly to connect on the volley but Walkey did well to parry the shot. Dan Cockwell also came close with a long range shot for Borough but Sherborne also stretched the Hornets defence with a slick move down the right on 62 minutes, but a header from the resulting cross was off target. Minutes later and a home move down the left resulted in Sherborne being awarded a penalty after Fooks was adjudged to have tripped a forward as he ran into the area, but the resulting spot kick hit the upright although Nash looked to have it covered. This lead to a frantic period as the home side pushed forward looking to recompense for that miss. However following another good block from Nash, Borough counter attacked and Fooks made amends for his earlier error as he played a return pass on the edge of the area before unleashing an unstoppable drive which beat Walkey just inside his left hand post. Sherborne produced some late pressure but Borough defended superbly to limit the home side to shots from long range and Nash dealt comfortable with the few attempts on target. There was also still time for further Borough chances on the counter, the closest when Fooks broke through from deep but he shot over. The result now means the Hornets are the form side in the Dorset Premier with five wins in the last six games. Borough: Nash, Cockwell, T.White, Herrington (Hebdon 46), Orchard, Fooks, Edwards, M.White, Bircumshaw, Russell (Chapple 81), Wilson (Campbell 46). |
