Wareham Rangers (0) 0, Poole Borough (2) 2. Elite Teamware Dorset Premier League Saturday 1st November 2003 Scorers: Steve
Russell 25, Derrant Blenman 25. Two first half goals in two minutes were enough for Borough to pick up their first league double of the season, but Wareham were left to rue a series of missed opportunities in the second half which may well have given them at least a share of the points. Derrant Blenman created an early chance for strike partner Kieron Campbell on 7 minutes, but his final shot was blocked by a defender. A minute later Blenman latched onto a through ball and shot just over. On 24 minutes Boroughs dominance paid off when Steve Russell put the Hornets ahead as he sent over a high ball from wide on the left which beat the home keeper as it dropped just under the bar. A minute later Borough doubled the score with a move started as James Edwards, fed Alex Gunn wide on the right which was drilled low into the 6 yard box and Campbell unselfishly left the ball for Blenman to strike home. In a good spell for the home side Rangers had a penalty appeal turned down on 35 minutes and Nash also had to push a shot past the post. Borough were unable to capitalise on further good approach play and Rangers came close to pulling a goal back just before the break as a scramble in the Borough area ended with a shot over the bar. Half Time 0-2. Unlike the first period, Borough were pushed back for much of the second half as the home side attacked down the slope. Within 10 minutes of the restart Rangers saw two clear chances sail over with the goal at their mercy. Scott Orchard came on to make his Borough debut and Stuart Merrell had to be replaced after becoming the victim of a vicious tackle as the Hornets continued to soak up home pressure. On 75 minutes Nash was forced to save well with his legs and two minutes later another Rangers shot cannoned off the bar and a further chance hit the outside of the post. Ten minutes from the end Campbell was sent down the left but his shot went wide of the far post and Blenman was also in action, just failing to steer a Gunn cross over the line. During the final minutes Hornets were content to play down the clock to secure their second successive win which moves them into the top 6 for the first time this season. Borough: Adam Nash, Shaun Clarke (Scott Orchard 51), Tony White, Sean Hebdon, Doug Hay, Stuart Merrell (Gary Fooks 69), James Edwards, Alex Gunn, Derrant Blenman, Kieron Campbell, Steve Russell (Scott Smith 78). Managers Comments .............................. Borough boss Pete Morrell said: "In the first half we played well but in the second I had to run the line. Obviously I could not help organise the lads and in the end I had to let them get on with it. Both sides were awful after the break but they made more chances and we got out of jail." Rangers' manager Steve Pryor said: "It was a scrappy game which was bad-tempered and poorly refereed. We played well in the second half but our finishing was not good enough."
