Westland Sports (1) 3,
Poole Borough (0) 0.
Elite Teamwear Dorset Premier League
Saturday 20th September 2003

In what was always going to be a difficult encounter at Westland’s new Alvington ground Borough fell to their third consecutive defeat. The departure from the club of Lee Russell and Stuart Merrell plus the absence of Scott Smith and Alex Gunn meant Pete Morrell had to make further changes to the side, bringing back Matt Norris to the starting line-up while Dan Herrington made his first appearance of the season.

Borough however were one down after only four minutes when Nick Jacobs latched onto a Chris Daley cross and the Hornets continued to struggle in the first half, although Sports were unable to increase their lead.

Half Time 1-0

Borough took the game to their hosts after the break and remained in contention until the last 15 minutes when Paul Dexter, who had earlier hit the bar scored the second and and Martin Blaby sealed victory with a fine strike set up the home sides third win of the season while Borough were left to reflect on their third consecutive game without a goal.

Borough: Adam Nash, Gary Fooks, Tony White, Shaun Clarke, Dan Herrington, Matt Norris (Sean Parker), James Edwards, Martin White, Steve Russell (James Morrell), Kieron Campbell, Matt Bircumshaw. Unused sub: Bradley Asagba.

Managers' Comments ..................

Poole Borough gaffer Pete Morrell watched his side cap a miserable seven days with a 3-0 defeat at Westland Sports. The Hornets' boss, who watched two players walk out of the club last week, has admitted that the signings he made from last seasons champions Hamworthy United "have not worked out".

Morrell said: "It has been a bad week for the club. We had two players leave- Lee Russell (to Hamworthy United) and Simon Hallam (to Holt) - and we have got another one who could also be on his way. We signed a lot of players from Hamworthy United over the summer and they have not worked out.

"There has been a few things said but I want commitment from all my players and that is how I run things. It is up to me to motivate the lads now because we have some big games coming up."

Winning manager Peter Watts said: "It was a good result but the pitch was hard and bumpy so it did not make for a great game but we stuck with it and I thought we deserved the win. We can play a lot better than we did but our pitch does need some work and we will do that."
