Cobham Sports (0) 2, Poole Borough (1) 4. Dorset Premier League Saturday 16th April 2005 Borough
Scorers: Jamie Holland 43, 77; O.G 52, Sean
Hebdon 65. Following three games without a win, Borough overcame a spirited performance from Cobham to secure all three points in the local derby and keep their hopes of a top three finish on track. With regular keeper Adam Nash unavailable Stuart Amey made his debut for Borough between the sticks. Borough started brightly and in the second minute a right wing cross from Gary Fooks eluded Jamie Holland inside the area, but Matt Morris came in from the left to collect the loose ball and shot narrowly wide of the far post. Sean Hebdon found himself on the centre of the action on six minutes as he headed a Cobham free-kick from wide on the left away from danger and a minute later the Borough defender again did well under pressure to clear a low cross from the right. On 24 minutes David Perry latched on to a through ball from Jimmy Edwards but the final shot was just off target, but at the other end Dave Dick raced clear of the Borough defence but his low drive from the right was blocked by Amey at the near post. Cobham broke away again on 38 minutes as Ryan Toms beat Amey to a through pass and lifted his shot over the Borough keeper but the ball bounced wide of the post, but a minute later following a Borough build up on the right Holland cut inside and slipped the ball to Andy Barham but the final shot was parried by Wayne Robbins in the home goal. Within two minutes Toms again broke through the Borough back line but this time Amey did well to force the home striker wide and the Borough keeper was able to deflect the final shot wide for a corner. It was Borough however who broke the deadlock a minute from the interval as Barham send a short pass to David Perry on the edge of the area and the Borough striker fed Holland 10 yards out who lifted the ball over the advancing Robbins to score his first goal since the end of February. In first half stoppage time Cobham came close to equalising as a lob from the edge of the area came off the bar and a home forward following through could only deflect the ball clear. HT 0-1 The goal gave Borough the confidence to step up the tempo after the break and they doubled the lead within five minutes of the restart as Holland found space wide on the right before slipping the ball inside to Perry on the edge of the area and his low cross into the box was turned into his own goal by a Simon Edwards, under pressure from Morris. Two minutes later Perry forced a mistake from a home defender as he knocked a Borough through ball past his own keeper but was fortunate to see it roll out for a corner. A minute later Holland latched on to a Tony White corner at the far post but his shot hit the side netting. However Cobham gave themselves a lifeline on 55 minutes, pulling a goal back after a cross from the by-line was met by Toms in the centre of the goal to steer his shot past Amey. Almost immediately Holland came close to restoring the lead for Borough as Gary Fooks sent the striker through and he shot past the advancing Robbins only to see the ball roll the wrong side of the post. On 65 minutes Borough restored their two goal advantage when Sean Hebdon met a Tony White corner with a looping header which evaded an attempt to clear from a defender stationed on the line. The Hornets should have extended their lead five minutes later as Andy Barham got his head to another corner from White, but in looking to steer the ball over the line, Borough's Jimmy Edwards touch directed it clear of the goal. Borough made the game safe on 77 minutes as Matty Parkin broke through on the right and sent a low cross to the far post where Holland arrived to squeeze the ball between defender and keeper to record his 24th goal of the season. Cobham continued to persevere and pulled a goal back six minutes from time after a Borough defensive clearance was cut out by a Cobham player who centered from the right and Simon Edwards made amends for his earlier mistake with a well executed strike from inside the area. Borough: Stuart Amey, Matt Parkin (Dan Cockwell 83), Tony White, Gary Fooks, Sean Hebdon, Dan Herrington, Jimmy Edwards, Jamie Holland (Ben Truan 80), David Perry, Andy Barham (Alex Gunn 77), Matt Morris. |
