Poole Borough (5) 7, Weymouth United (1) 1. Pre-Season Friendly Saturday 14th August Scorers: Ben Truan 25, 36, 45; Carl Marshall 23, 55; Sean Hebdon 43; Matt Bircumshaw 65. The first team completed their pre-season programme with an emphatic victory against Dorset Senior opposition at Turlin Moor with new signing from Wimborne, Matty Parkin making his debut at right back and Ben Truan scoring an excellent first half hat-trick. The first 15 minutes were even but Borough took the lead on 23 minutes when Sean Hebdon threaded a low through pass to Carl Marshall on the edge of the area who turned well before slotting past the keeper. Two minutes later Borough doubled the lead as Tony White headed a deep right wing corner back across goal and Truan rose to nod the ball home. On 36 minutes another Borough corner deflected off a defender and Truan buried the loose ball. Andy Barham came close to opening his account for the Hornets with a shot which cannoned down from the bar and bounced away off the goal line, but Borough's fourth came from another flag kick on 43 minutes which picked out Sean Hebdon unmarked in the centre of the area to head home. Truan completed his hat-trick a minute before the break as he ran onto a forward pass before coolly converting past the advancing keeper. There was just time for United to pull a goal back before half time after a visiting forward capitalised on a defensive mistake to run through and score. HT 5-1 Ten minutes after the break Marshall scored his second with a deft lob to beat the keeper and Matt Bircumshaw scored probably the goal of the game on 65 minutes as he got his head to a high ball into the area from Hebdon before turning and burying his resulting shot on the volley. United did push forward towards the end of the game and forced an excellent save from Adam Nash, but Dan Moore was unfortunate not to further increase the home sides lead with a curling shot which beat the keeper but came back off the post. Borough: Adam Nash, Matty Parkin, Tony White, Shaun Clarke, Sean Hebdon (Scott Orchard 73), Dan Herrington, Alex Gunn (Mark Vincent 60), Andy Barham, Carl Marshall (Jamie Wilson 60), Ben Truan (Dan Moore 72), Matt Bircumshaw. Poole
Borough (0) 3, A hastily arranged fixture against local Dorset Sunday League opposition provided a good workout although Borough did not play well in the first half, but superior fitness and overall ability showed in the secong period as goals from Tony White, Derrant Blenman and Dan Moore saw the Hornets cruise to victory. Wimborne
Town (0) 0, Borough produced another impressive performance as they held the Wessex League Division 1 runners-up to a scoreless draw in an entertaining encounter despite the lack of goals, with chances created at both ends. Borough boss Tony White marshalled the defence well against his former club and Andy Barham was also excellent in midfield in an early return to Cuthbury after his recent transfer to the Hornets. Up front Borough again started with new boys Lee James and Carl Marshall with Derrant Blenham replacing James for the last 15 minutes. All in all Borough were well worth a draw against former boss Paul Arnold's side. Poole
Borough Reserves (1) 2, In hot conditions, both sides produced good football in a pre-curser to their Dorset League Division One encounters when the season gets underway. Borough took a first half lead with a goal from Darren Abreu and held the advantage until mid-way into the second half when the visitors equalised with a far post header from a corner. Gary Fooks returned to Borough colours and produced a typically tireless display in mid-field while Abreu and Richard Gannaway were beginning to build a partnership up front and they combined well to score Borough's second as Gannaway beat the offside track to latch on to a perfectly weighted through ball before knocking a pass into the path of Abreu to slot home. Poole
Borough (4) 6, Borough came through another good workout against one of the Dorset Senior League's top sides at Turlin Moor. It was Allendale who took the lead early on before Mark Vincent levelled the scores and goals from Lee James and Carl Marshall put Borough into a comfortable lead. Just before the break, James scored his second will a well taken finish from the edge of the 6-yard box. Immediately after the interval Allendale pulled a goal back following a breakaway, but James restored the three goal advantage after a neat interchange with Derrant Blenman on the edge of the area, picking his spot to convert. Before the end James turned provider as he sent Alan Fooks into space down the left and the veteran striker made no mistake, shooting low into the right hand corner. Borough: Stuart James, Dan Cockwell, Tony White, Shaun Clarke, Dan Herrington, Dan Ramenaden, Alex Gunn, Matt Bircumshaw, Lee James, Carl Marshall, Jamie Wilson. Subs (all used): Mark Vincent, Adam Nash, Derrant Blenman, Alan Fooks. Poole
Borough Reserves (0) 1, A crowd of over 80 were at Turlin Moor to see Poole Town field their newly re-formed reserve side, which as fate would have it was at the ground where they played their final Dorset Combination home campaign before the side were disbanded nine seasons previously. Town got off to the best of starts as they took an early lead due to a Borough own goal, but the Hornets kept the visitors at bay for the remainder of the half against a Town side, under the guidance of Tommy Killick, who were fielding a number of first team players. Borough nearly drew level immediately after the re-start as a low cross into the area alluded both forwards and defence as it flew across the area. However, with the Dolphins making a full change of line-up for the second half, they were able to take advantage of fresh legs to craft two excellent goals from a series of swift passing moves. For Borough, Richard Gannaway impressed up front in his first start and he deservedly pulled a goal back when he turned onto a through ball inside the box before dispatching a perfect lob to beat the advancing keeper. Town however continued to look dangerous breaking through from midfield and scored a fourth with twenty minutes remaining before missing a penalty towards the end. Shaftesbury
(1) 2 Another good performance saw Borough pick up their second pre-season 'Wessex 2' scalp after defeating Shaftesbury at Cockrams. Borough stormed into a 3-0 lead inside the first 25 minutes with Dan Moore netting a hat-trick, while further good play could well have seen the Hornets increase their lead before the Rockies pulled a goal back just on half-time when a long ball caught out the visitors defence. Shaftesbury improved in the second half and reduced the lead further, by which time Borough were taking full advantage of the recently relaxed FIFA substitution rules to swap the team around. For Borough fans there were some good pointers for the new season, with Dan Moore obviously carrying his performances for the reserves into the senior side, while new signing from Wimborne, Andy Barham looked impressive in the centre of midfield. Up front Darrent Blenham, who has recently rejoined the club, partnered Lee James. Poole
Borough (0) 0, A crowd of over 300 were at Turlin Moor to welcome the FA Vase winners in their first game following their final victory at Birmingham's St. Andrews Stadium back in May, and City were given a warm round of applause as they paraded the trophy prior to kick off. Borough were however always going to be under pressure against a side which had made some significant additional signings to add to their treble winning line-up, including a trio of former Wimborne players, Darren Powell, Mark Smith and Stuart Cannie. To their credit Borough held their opponents for the first 15 minutes and striker Lee James had the best chance of that period when he cut in from the left and shot just over. Winchester however took the lead on 16 minutes when hesitation in the Borough defence saw Shaun Clarke head a cross onto his own bar and Jamie Musselwhite was first to the rebound to bundle the ball over the line. Five minutes later Darren Powell celebrated his debut with a goal as he picked up a clearance on the edge of the area before rifeling home, and Mark Smith also got on the scoresheet on 26 minutes intercepting a poor pass across Borough back line to run through and slotting past the advancing Adam Nash. Borough created a couple of chances before the interval, Dan Moore working a good interchange of passes on the edge of the area before shooting just past the post and Mark Vincent putting a header wide, but only an excellent last ditch tackle from Clarke denied Smith his second. HT 0-3 Winchester needed only two minutes after the break to increase their lead as Jamie Laidlaw converted a corner at the far post and Gregory scored the fifth on 56 minutes as he arrived unmarked on the left to convert a long cross. Borough continued to play their passing game and it nearly created dividends on 64 minutes when James broke through on the right but he was denied by an excellent defensive block. Winchester, however benefited as the Borough defence began to tire and Smith scored his second, converting a low right wing cross at the far post on 73 minutes and a defensive mix-up presented Laidlaw with a simple tap-in tem minutes from time. Borough came close to picking up a consolation two minutes before the end as Paul Getley's far post header from a corner came back off the post and Kieran Campbell was first to the rebound, but shot over.. Borough: Adam Nash, Dan Cockwell, Tony White, Shaun Clarke, Scott Orchard, Mark Vincent, Alex Gunn, Paul Getley, Kieran Campbell, Lee James, Matt Bircumshaw. Subs (all used) Doug Shear, Jamie Wilson, Sean Hebdon, Dan Moore, Carl Marshall. Poole
Borough (2) 3, Borough Scorers: O.G., Ben Truan, Lee James Borough completed the first game of the new season with a convincing victory against their Wessex League Division 2 visitors. Borough took the lead with an own goal before Ben Truan doubled the lead before the interval. Borough included Lee James up front, who was top scorer at Swanage last season and he looked lively, and went on to score Borough's third. |
