Hamworthy United (1) 1, Poole Borough (0) 0. Dorset Senior Cup - Second Round Wednesday 3rd November 2004 Borough Man of the Match: Adam Nash Borough's lack of a full first team fixture for nearly four weeks was poor preparation for their fixture against their closest of rivals, now playing two leagues above them in Wessex 1. Howeve but the fixture produced another close encounter but despite a battling second half performance by Borough, a Scott Bedward goal ten minutes before the break was enough to see the Hammers into the third round draw. Hamworthy started the brighter but the Borough defence absorbed the pressure and the best of the early chances fell to Gary Fooks who latched onto a defensive clearance, but his shot went over. On 16 minutes Adam Nash did well to save a long-range effort at full stretch while a minute later David Perry connected to a Kenny Hughes knock down but Wayne Shaw in the home goal was equal to the shot. As the half progressed, Borough began to carve out further chances and on 23 minutes Derant Blenman fed Perry on the left before collecting the return pass on the edge of the area but shot narrowly wide. After a succession of Borough corners, Tony White came close on 35 minutes stooping low to get his head to a Hughes cross from the left which went just the wrong side of the upright. However a minute later Hamworthy took the lead after Borough were unable to clear a long throw into the area and Bedward latched onto the loose ball and made the space to tuck his shot home. Just before the break, Borough carved out another chance as Gary Fooks stole down the right and his angled cross was met by Blenman but the shot cleared the bar. Half Time 1-0. Almost immediately after the restart Borough nearly forced the equaliser as Shaw spilled a high cross from Fooks under the bar but the keeper recovered to smother the loose ball before Perry could get a foot in to steer it home. Borough continued to pressure and Hamworthy lived dangerously conceding two free kicks on the edge of the area, the first from Gary Fooks was held by Shaw on the goal line, while the second from Danny Herrington went narrowly over. The Hammers however were dangerous on the break and on 50 minutes Keith Middleton collected a through ball on the right and made space for a shot which went just past the far post while five minutes later Sean Hebdon did well to steal the ball after another swift counter attack although the interchange left the home players appealing for a penalty. On 72 minutes Perry did well to get between two defenders to latch onto a through ball but he was unable to get a clean touch on his final shot and the advancing Shaw was able to block. With Borough committed forward Middleton again found space on the counter but this time his shot as well blocked by Nash and the Borough keeper came out to make another fine save to deny Bedward one-on-one after the Borough offside trap was breached. With time running out Borough continued to probe but Hamworthy were content to defend in numbers and play out for time and the visitor's best chance came in the final minute when Fooks curled free kick in from the edge of the area with the wall still being lined up, but Shaw read the play well to get across his goal and collect.
