Dorset Premier League Cup Final
@ The Avenue Stadium, Dorchester
Tuesday 26th April 2005

Borough Scorers: Jamie Holland 15, Matt Morris 79.
Borough Man of the Match: Andy Barham

Borough Skipper Sean Hebdon collects the cup from Ted Mallows.

A Matt Morris goal 15 minutes from full time separated the sides as Poole Borough lifted the Dorset Premier League in a tight encounter at the Avenue Stadium.

Both sides were slow to get into their stride on a pitch made heavy by a torrential downpour half an hour before kick-off. However the game sprang into life on 15 minutes when David Perry sent Gary Fooks clear down the right flank and his deep cross was driven back into the danger zone by Dan Herrington where Jamie Holland found space between two defenders to curl a shot past Holt keeper Dan Burton.

Five minutes later Borough nearly doubled their lead as Andy Barham stole down the left before picking out Holland in front of goal but the Hornets top scorer stabbed the ball just wide. The game remained on a knife edge as Holt also came close with a header from a free kick which bounced the wrong side of the upright.

Immediately prior to the interval Perry battled to the left hand edge of the area but he was unable to get full power to his shot and Burton got down smartly to collect.

HT 0-1

Holt stepped up their game immediately after the break and drew level within five minutes of the restart as a clever ball over the Borough defence found Paul Lane clear on the left and he finished impressively over the advancing Stuart Amey.

Borough were then forced to weather a 10 minutes spell of Holt pressure and the Bulls were unfortunate to see a through ball to Jason Lovell hold up in the mud with Herrington reacting quickest to clear.

As the half progressed Borough began to get back into their rhythm and opened up their opponents with some slick passing moves although they were restricted to two long-range efforts from Fooks. It was however a piece of brilliance from Barham on 79 minutes which lead to the winner as the former Wimborne midfielder was fed by Holland wide on the right and he jinked to the by-line before drawing Burton and centring to Morris for a simple tap-in.

Four minutes later Burton had to be replaced by an outfield player after he sustained an injury clearing the ball under pressure from Holland. But Borough were unable to test the stand-in as Holt threw caution to the wind, pushing forward in numbers and it took desperate clearances from Jimmy Edwards and Tony White to keep the Bulls at bay, and present Borough with their first Dorset Premier silverware since joining the league in 2002.
