Borough Man of the Match: David Perry

Borough put their title challenge back on track in the derby at Magna Road to chalk up the double against their local rivals the victory built on a solid defensive performance by the Hornets and secured by two clinical strikes from David Perry.

Inside the first five minutes Rec. created two early chances with a right wing free kick, which was headed over and a good through ball was latched onto by a home striker but the shot was off target.

On 7 minutes David Perry created the first clear opening for Borough, receiving the ball on the edge of the area, but his shot in the turn went wide. Almost immediately Jamie Moores carved out some space on the left but Adam Nash did well to deflect the resulting shot over.

Perry came close for Borough again on 9 minutes, latching onto a long kick forward from Nash before shooting wide. And on 15 minutes Borough took the lead after a good build up from defence saw Perry run on to a return pass from Andy Barham before unleashing a low drive past the advancing Kevin Leonard which went in off the far post.

Borough defended in depth were able to soak up much of the home sides pressure but Rec. went close on 25minutes when a free-kick from the left picked out a home forward at the far post but his shot flashed across goal and past the upright.

The game was not all one way and Jamie Holland carved out a chance for himself after stealing the ball from a home defender on the right before cutting inside and shooting narrowly wide. Just before the break another home chance saw Moores get his head to a free-kick but the ball went just past the upright.

HT 0-1

Borough were able to contain their hosts defensively after the break but they were fortunate on 61 minutes when a sharp strike from a near post corner was cleared off the line. Four minutes later a good diagonal into the area by Moores resulted in a cross to Cris Rigler but the final shot cleared the bar.

The Hornets however remained a threat on the break, and Leonard was forced to punch clear from a corner and the ball fell to Alex Gunn whose long range strike blazed just over.

From another break away on 74 minutes Borough were awarded a free-kick near the right corner flag for a foul on Barham, and Tony White sent a testing drive into the box which Perry latched onto with a bullet header to double the lead.

With the clock ticking down, Borough were put under some sustained pressure from their hosts as they looked for a way back and both Moores and Rigler saw chances go wide before the Hornets were able to celebrate a critical victory and inflict the double on their fellow championship contenders.

Borough: Adam Nash, Matty Parkin, Tony White, Andy Barham, Sean Hebdon, Dan Herrington (Dan Cockwell 63), Alex Gunn, Jamie Holland (Ben Truan 58), David Perry, Mark Vincent, Matt Morris. Unused Subs: Matt Bircumshaw.

The Verdict ..................

Losing boss Pat Notley was not too happy with the result. He said: "We did not deserve to lose. They had two chances and scored them both but we had ten chances and did not get any. We should have been in front before they even got near our goal. After they scored, they shut up shop. They have a good defence but had we had our shooting boots on we would have grabbed a hatful. We have lost two home games recently where on the balance of play we should have won them both".

Borough Manager Tony White said: "We played well and had the right attitude. We were up for the game and I thought we thoroughly deserved the win. They missed a glaring chance in the second half but after that they ran out of ideas. We played the better football and defended well and I think the result has shaken them a but. I think they are still the favourites for the title but we will try to keep with them".
