In his first full season in charge Tony White strengthened the squad with experienced Wessex League players Andy Barham and Matty Parkin and promoted Reserves manager Giles Kilshawe as his assistant. There followed an excellent pre-season, with only one defeat, against FA Vase Holders Winchester City, in nine games, which appeared to have laid good foundations for the campaign. However Borough had to come from 2-1 down against league new boys Cranborne before recording a 4-2 opening day victory but then followed up with two defeats on the road at Bournemouth Sports and Holt United to cap a disappointing August. However Borough's season was defined in the following two games as a convincing midweek victory at home to Hamworthy Recreation was inspired by a 'guest' appearance from Jamie Holland who has signed Dorset Premier forms at the start of the season, and the next fixture, a home win against Wareham Rangers saw the debut of teenage striker David Perry who had signed from Allendale. This formed the beginning of a run of five wins and one draw which put the season firmly back on track, with the only points dropped being at the Avenue Stadium in a hard fought 0-0 draw against the early pace setters Dorchester Town Reserves. Borough found themselves drawn against near neighbours and newly promoted Wessex 1 side Hamworthy United in the Dorset Senior Cup at the beginning of November and were faced with the worst possible preparation as they were without a game for 4 weeks prior to the tie. However the team still did themselves proud as only a single first half goal from the Hammers separated the sides. Within the week though Holland had made his move to Turlin Moor permanent and following a last minute defeat at Westlands the team went on an unbeaten run of 11 games which ran through to the end of January an included only a single draw at Gillingham and a club record equalling 12-1 league cup victory against Stourpaine. During that period Holland also equalled Alan Fooks record of scoring in 10 consecutive league games for Borough. February though saw Borough's form dip as former manager Pete Morrell's Cobham side battled to a 2-1 victory against Turlin Moor, Borough's first home defeat and two weeks later an under strength Sherborne side also went away from the Moor with all three points. But March saw Borough back with a chance of honours as they completed the double over title favourites Hamworthy Recreation with a 2-0 win at Magna Road and on Easter Saturday they took league leaders Dorchester Town Reserves apart in a 5-1 home victory in what would turn out to be a decisive victory. Moving into April and although the league title looked unlikely runners-up spot was still an achievable target, but before that Borough booked their place in the Dorset Premier League Cup final with a single goal victory in a close game against Sturminster Newton. However another mini-slump saw a draw at Sturminster Newton followed by a midweek home defeat by Bournemouth Sports but the Hornets put things back on track with three straight wins to keep the opportunity of second spot in their own hands going in to the last game. Before that though was the League Cup Final against Holt United at the Avenue Stadium Dorchester, and a torrential downpour just before kick-off resulted in a heavy pitch not suited to Borough's passing style but Jamie Holland gave Borough a half-time lead before Holt drew level immediately before the break but a goal line tap in from Matt Morris 10 minutes from time was enough to see the Hornets seal their first trophy since they joined the DPL. The following Saturday came the chance to follow the League Cup with Runners-up spot at Wareham Rangers and at half time Borough were two goals ahead and appeared to be cruising but a brace from Heckford within five minutes of the restart pulled Rangers back on level terms before Holland scored twice to give Borough breathing space again but with two minutes remaining Wareham pulled a goal back to provide some nervous moments before Borough Captain Sean Hebdon was able to lift his second trophy of the week to complete the clubs best season to date. |
