Stalbridge (0) 0, Poole Borough Reserves (0) 1. Dorset County League Division 1 Saturday 19th March 2005 Borough Scorer: Wayne Smith Boro were looking to bounce back from defeat at Easton and on a scorching hot day the lads were just as hot!! With a few vital players available again Mark had a strong squad to choose from. Boro played uphill first half and didn't look unduly bothered both the steep incline as time and again they carved open the home defence, while at the other end anything that was thrown forward was easily dealt with by Clarke and Orchard. Clarke was having a storming game until the 20th minute when stooping to head a ball back to Amey he caught his foot in a divot and damaged his calf, he tried in vain to carry on but had to be replaced a few minutes later. At the other and Cockwell seemed to be on a one man mission as he tormented their left back and constantly creating chances for the strikers, and almost scored when his corner was going directly in, only to be headed off the line. The best chance of the half came when Abreu was put clean through but his near post shot hit the keeper and bounced for a corner. Half Time 0 - 0 The second half started with Boro attacking straight away, creating chance after chance. It wasn't long before Boro scored and that came about from a ball in from the left which was met by Smith who guded it home(with the help of an opposing defender again!!), but he claimed it. 0 - 1 With that Boro attacked at will and another ball in from the left came to the fett of Abreu who took a touch and was thwarted by the keeper. A nice little interchange of passes between Woldon and Abreu ended with Abreu flicking the ball over the defenders head for Woldon to run onto but his resulting shot went over the bar. Boro could have won by four or five but in the end had to settle for the one. A quality display with just rewards. Borough: Amey, Allen, Clarke (Shanley), Orchard, Pearce (Griffin), Cockwell, Smith, Farley, Constable (Woldon), Abreu, Arkless Easton
United (1) 3, Borough Scorer: Aaron
Woldon This game was played in awful conditions on Fraggle Rock, 1st we had a gale force wind sweeping across the pitch, which was followed in quick succession by rain, sleet and then snow. Borough started this game with half the midfield missing and looking at the opposition the boat was in. Easton got going right from the start, attacking freely with the wind behind them, causing mayhem in the Boro defence, so it was only a matter of time before they eventually scored with a through ball that their forward ran onto, knocked it over Amey as he ran out of the area and rolled it into the back of the net. It took about another 20 minutes for Boro to get going and 1st Waldon ran through, beat the keeper, but also the post. Then Constable went close with a volley from a clearance at a corner until eventually a shot by Waldon was parried by their keeper only for Waldon to knock in the rebound. Half Time 1 -1 The second half started with the wind dropping completely(surprise!!) and yet again Easton came out of the blocks well, playing some neat one touch football. This provided them with another goal as some quick interchanges split the Boro defence and allowed their forward to race through and score. 2 - 1 Not long afterwards a corner wasn't cleared properly and kindly bounced to an Easton player who made no mistake from about an inch. 3 - 1 Right at the end Easton were through again and hit the bar, as the ball came back Constable tried to head it clear but was pushed in the back and handled it. Boro didn't get the decision they were expecting when the referee pointed to the spot, Justice was done though when Amey saved the resulting spot kick with his feet. Borough: Amey, Allen (Ross?), Clarke, Orchard, Pearce, Constable, Smith, Coles, Arkless, Samson (Gerrard), Woldon. Poole
Borough Reserves (1) 2. Borough Scorers: Matt
Morris, Dan Cockwell With Borough's first team game at Dorchester United postponed and with some important fixtures coming up, many of the Senior squad were on duty for this fixture. And with the wind conditions probably the worst since Borough first played at the Moor and Cougars boasting a number of new signings from Portland, including former assistant manager Micky Greeno, Borough were given a good test. After an even first 20 minutes, Borough took the lead when Aaron Woldon centred for Matt Morris to convert. Cougars however were not to be outdone and created some good openings before the break without being able to administer the final finish which could have put them even. Half Time 1 - 0 Borough came out stronger in the second half, and were disappointed to see a penalty shout turned down after Woldon was upended in the area. However the all important second goal came on 66 minutes when Alex Gunn broke down the right and centered to Andy Barham at the near post who turned the ball across goal and Dan Cockwell arrived to convert the cross from the edge of the box. Borough: Adam Nash, Matty Parkin (Barry Gerrard 67), Tony White (Wayne Smith 67), Andy Barham, Sean Hebdon (Scott Ison 71), Dan Herrington, Alex Gunn, Mark Vincent, Aaron Woldon, Dan Cockwell, Matt Morris. Royal
Oak Cougars (2) 2, Borough Scorers: Gerrard,
Pearce, Chapple With the Christmas break over the question was could the Borough carry on where they left off in 2004? With a few players missing once more, Mark had to do more shuffling, Shear back in goal because Stuart Amey's better half had gone into labour (everyone wishes them all the best). The game started quite end to end with Borough playing some intricate passing, but it was the Cougars who got the breakthrough first when a ball in was caught by DOUG SHEAR only for it to squirm out from under his body right to the forward who had a simple tap in. 1 - 0 Borough came straight back at them with some swift moves, and about five minutes later were rewarded as a chipped ball through was chased into the box by BARRY GERRARD who calmly lobbed it over the advancing keeper. 1 - 1 Not long afterwards a ball in from the right was met in the six yard box by 'Leatherface' TIM PEARCE who's usually unpredictable heading ability worked in his favour as he found the back of the net. 1 - 2 The Cougars kept on going though and just before half time forced a corner. The resulting ball in sailed over everyone and was met at the far post with a good header. 2 - 2 Half Time 2 - 2 The second half saw Borough camped in their own half for long periods of time but some excellent defending meant the score stayed at 2 - 2. Borough tried to put a few attacks together but couldn't find a decent ball in the opposition half of the field. The cougars kept plugging away and more waves of attacks followed, but all were thwarted by the Borough defence. With LEE ATKINS struggling with an injury , DANNY CHAPPLE was thrown into the game, and almost made an immediate impact, he latched on to a lovely through ball only to see the keeper gather his shot. With five minutes to go Borough managed to put together a few attacks, and one paid off when a shot by GERRARD was well saved by the keeper, only for the ball to fall kindly for CHAPPLE who slotted home from a tight angle. 2 - 3 Borough then shut up shop at the back to record their first win of 2005. Borough: Shear, Allen, Smith, Ison (Shanley), Pearce, Constable, Vincent, Wilson (Cuff), Moore, Gerrard, Atkins (Chapple). Poole
Borough Reserves (0) 3, Borough Scorers: Abreu (pen), Shear, Gerrard. Borough went into this game looking to avenge the defeat at Dorchester a fortnight ago, and started the game at a high tempo. They created a series of chances, some that would have been easier to score, but despite the pressure couldn't find a breakthrough. Borough didn't have it all their own way though as YMCA launched a few good counter attacks, most of them halted by some excellent defending. But one attack almost paid off when a crossfield ball evaded everyone and fell to a YMCA forward, who looked up and unleashed a fierce shot that seemed a goal, only for AMEY to produce an excellent save to push it over the bar. Despite more Borough pressure they could not open the scoring. Half Time 0 - 0. Borough came flying out of the blocks in the secong half and produced wave after wave of attacks and it looked like only a matter of time before they scored. As it turned out Borough had to wait until about the seventieth minute when a clumsy challenge in the box resulted in a penalty. Up stepped ABREU to send the keeper the wrong way and put it in the right hand corner. 1 - 0. Not long after a good ball in from the left was met by an unmarked supersub SHEAR, using his ginger mop to good effect as he guided it past the motionless keeper. 2 - 0 Borough were then in the incendency and poured forward again, this time forcing a corner. The resulting corner was not cleared very well at all and several shots were fired in before another sub, 18 year old BARRY GERRARD acrobatically volleyed home with his left foot for his first ever Borough goal. 3 - 0. Borough continued to attack but YMCA were saved by the ref's whistle. Another great performance which meant Borough topped the table over Xmas. Borough: Amey, Allen, Orchard, Smith, Pearce (Cuff), Gunn, Farley, Wilson, Atkins (Gerrard), Abreu, Ison (Shear). Sherborne
Town Reserves (0) 1, Borough Scorers: Shear 2, Orchard, Abreu, OG. Borough welcomed another two new signings to the club in defender WAYNE SMITH and goalkeeper STUART AMEY as MARK SAMSON had to name a changed side with vital players missing and having seen the way Sherborne played at the Moor against the majority of Borough first team, worries were cast as to how they could be stopped. No worries from the whistle though as Borough came out fighting right from the start, not letting Sherborne have a second on the ball. ABREU came narrowly close a couple of times. Sherborne battled back and were clean through, but the forward's point blank drive was brilliantly pushed away by AMEY, they then forced a few corners but not a lot else. Borough then stepped up a gear and started to force the issue with shots coming in from all angles, but at the break had nothing to show for their hard work. Half Time 0 - 0. Borough started the second half how they finished the first, with cutting balls through the defence which the home side found hard to cope with. Then with 20 minutes left, against the run of play a Sherborne midfielder was allowed to jink past five players a put a ball through for their forward who chipped in from the edge of the box. Mark then threw on his trump card in DOUG SHEAR who immediatly made his mark with a diving header across the goal from a cross from the left. 1-1 With about 5 minutes to go another ball in from the left was met by SCOTT ORCHARD who headed into the top corner. Almost straight from the kick-off the ball was won back and ARKLESS was sent clear down the left wing, his cross was missed completely by the defender which left SHEAR to skew the ball into the bottom right corner. Before the bench could calm down from the last celebration, ABREU was put through and smashed a right foot thunderbolt into the top right corner. 1 - 4 With a minute or so to go Borough were awarded a free kick just outside the area, VINCENT curled the ball in, the keeper called for it only to be beaten in the air by one of his defenders whose deft flick went over and into the net. Probably the best game the reserves have played all season. Borough: Amey, Allen, Smith, Orchard, Pearce, Gerrard (Constable), Farley, Vincent, Arkless, Abreu, Atkins (Shear) Dorchester
YMCA (2) 2, Borough Man of the Match: Scott Orchard As with previous games Borough didnt get off to the best of starts as a hopeful ball forward by the home side was left by the Hornets defence who were looking for an offside decision and no-one picked up a forward running through who headed over the advancing SHEAR and then squared the ball back for any easy tap in. Borough then tried to push forward only to be beaten again when another long punt forward landed wide of the goal area and as SHEAR attempted to clear he was tackled by a home forward which sent the ball across the face of goal and present the home side with another tap in. Borough finally got their act together and their persistent attacks were rewarded when WILSON went on a run into the box, touched the ball to ABREU who turned and beat three defenders, and himself twice, before unleashing an unstoppable shot past the home keeper. Half Time 2 - 1 The second half saw Dorchester start the brighter, but slowly Borough began to take control, constantly pushing their defenders back. Shots were flying in from all angles and Dorchester were for the most part reduced to counter attacking up the slope. ABREU came close again following a clever move from a throw in by WILSON to CUFF who volleyed into the box for VINCENT to chest into his path, only to see the final shot creep inches wide. Borough continued to pour forward into the dying moments but to no avail and sadly the game was spoilt late on with Borough on the receiving end of some poor tackles as the home side clung on to their slender lead. Borough: Shear, Allen, Orchard, Pearce (Gerrard), Cuff (Atkins), Constable, Shanley, Vincent, Wilson, Abreu, Ison. Poole
Borough Reserves (1) 1. Borough Man of the Match: Doug Shear A slow start to this game as usual for Borough who struggled to take the ball from Allendale, and when they did, couldn't keep it. Borough then started to get their act together , spurred on by some quality defending and on 10 minutes a long ball down the right found Abreu who took the defender on and whipped in a low ball across the area, ISON was on hand to steer the ball past the opposing keeper. 1 - 0 The game turned into a tight midfield battle with not a good deal of decent final ball to the strikers from either side. Allendale started to make a few chances only to be thwarted by SHEAR again and again which also included one breathtaking save. HALF TIME 1 - 0 The second half saw Borough start to put together some good passing moves wich split the Allendale defence on more than one occasion but with no finish to boot. Allendale were now getting into the game more and creating chances but an each attack they were outdone by some excellent defending or forther good saves by SHEAR. The game descended into the midfield and a whole host of Allendale free kicks, with Borough attempting to push forward but kept getting caught on counter attacks. There was a bit of nail biting on the bench but Borough's resolute defending and all round play was rewared with all 3 points. Borough: Shear , Allen , Orchard , Pearce , K Griffin , Constable(Farley) , Shanley , Vincent , Arkless , Abreu , Ison (Atkins) Corfe
Mullen United (2) 3, The game was played on a difficult pitch that was heavy and full of potholes which obviously played to the home team's strengths, as they came out all guns blazing. Borough struggled to hold on for the first 5-10 minutes but then started to get a foothole in the game only for it to be undone when Corfe Mullen broke away and scored. 1 - 0 That stunned Borough into life and they started to push forward but found it hard to put a decent move together, partly due to good defending and some bad passing. All the good work was undone again though about 10 minutes later when a Corfe cross was only cleared to the edge of the area to an unmarked player who slammed his shot passed the unfortunate SHEAR. 2 - 0. Borough then got going and a sublime ball through by ORCHARD beat the offside trap and ABREU rounded the keeper and slotted home from an acute angle. HALF TIME 2 - 1 Borough came out for the second half and totally dominated the first 20 minutes and were unlucky not to score, coming close on numerous occasions. The break came when a cross from the right was half cleared and ' top trumps' VINCENT smashed the ball past the keeper. 2 - 2 It looked destined for more goals for Borough as they continued to press, but Corfe started to get a bit more of the ball and the game went went end to end. Just as it looked like Borough were going to get a well earned draw, Corfe were awarded a contreversial free-kick which was well tipped away by SHEAR only to fall at the feet of a Corfe player who bundled it over the line. 3 - 2 Borough kept pressing but to no avail and Corfe took all three points. Borough: Shear , Allen , Orchard , Pearce , Cuff (Flooks) , Constable , Shanley(Atkins) , Vincent , Arkless , Abreu , Moore. Poole
Borough Reserves (1) 3. Borough Man of the Match: Andy Coles Borough welcomed ANDY COLES back into the fold for this game after a time away from the club and he slotted into centre midfield easily. The first 10-15 minutes Borough made the game look easy with slick passing which was cutting the Stalbridge defence to ribbons. However just as they thought the game was going to be a breeze, a Stalbridge cross? from the left hand touchline, half way inside the Borough half seemed to catch out SHEAR who let the ball slip between his hands and into the net. 0-1 This seemed to spur Borough back into life and not long after BEN TRUAN jinked his way into the area only to be up ended to win a penalty. Up stepped CRAIG SHANLEY to end his own personal crossbar challenge and find the back of the net. 1-1 . A few more chances came and went but the teams went in level. Half Time 1 - 1 . Borough came out in the second half full of gusto and went for it, only to be frustrated by some excellent defending and some bad ball play. They kept on plugging away with the belief that they would soon get the goal they deserved, that goal duly came with about 20 minutes to go with great ball in from the left to the far post which COLES sprung to despatch a header back into the other corner leaving the keeper with no chance. 2-1 With about a minute left on the clock LEE ATKINS went on one of his trademark 'all on my own' runs from his own half and right up to the opposing penalty area, he then thread a lovely ball through to PETE ARKLESS who smashed it past the keeper's right hand into the net. 3 - 1. Seconds later the referee blew time and a very hard fought victory. Borough: Shear, Allen (Atkins), Orchard, Pearce, Griffin, Constable, Shanley (Cuff), Coles, Arkless, Abreu, Truan. Wareham
Rangers Reserves (0) 1, Borough Man of the Match: Tommy Allen After a tentative first 5 minutes where the players of both teams were struggling to stand up in the slippery conditions Borough managed to get to grips with a tough Wareham side , but not before some early pressure on the borough defence was weathered. Mark Samson, making his borough debut, soon got to grips with the tall, battling strikers and was soon using his power and heading ability to great effect. After a few waves of attacks borough started to gain more confidence and were rewarded when another ball into the box was not well cleared which resulted in Carl Griffin unleashing a shot from the edge of the area which skidded into the far corner of the net. 0-1 Borough then started to play neat one touch passing which at times Wareham found hard to get a touch of the ball. The pressure paid off when a clever ball into the box was streered home by Craig Shanley. 0-2. Now Borough were really pushing for goals and only unfortunate misses, great defending and the foot of the post denied them adding to their tally before half time, Pete Arkless for one unlucky when a great ball in by Scott Ison saw his first time volley fly over the bar. Half Time 0-2 The second half saw Wareham come out with a bit more bite as the pushed forward to try and break their duck. They created a few chances but some resolute defending again kept them out. Borough eventually managed to find their feet again and began to push forward in numbers. a series of shots and corners were beaten away until a cross in from the right bounced kindly for Arkless to steer a left foot volley home for his second goal in two games. Not long afterwards a "long hopeful ball" from the right into the box by Tom Allen caused panic and was glanced home into the far corner from about 10 yards by Wareham's "Attilio Lombardo lookalike" for an Own Goal. 0-4 Wareham then suddenly got one back when a weaving run into the box was not dealt with and their players managed to knock past the advancing shear. 1-4. After that the game lost it's edge and most of the game was played in the centre of the park, the game ended as borough tried to put together one last attack. Borough: Shear, Allen, Pearce, Samson (Flooks), Griffin, Constable, Shanley, Vincent (Cuff), Wilson, Ison, Arkless (Abreu) Poole
Borough Reserves (3) 6, Borough Man of the Match: Darren Abreu Borough opened the scoring within 30 seconds of Okeford kicking off as Scott Ison flicked the ball forward to Darren Abreu who rounded the keeper and slotted home. 1-0. On 13 minutes Borough doubled the lead as Mark Vincent pressured an Okeford defender into a backward header, which Abreu took advantage of to volley home. 2-0. Vincent came close to scoring direct from a corner on 15 minutes but the visiting keeper made a good save, but following a poor spell for Borough Okeford pulled a goal back on the half hour after forcing a corner when a shot was deflected wide, the resulting flag kick was met with a far post volley which took a deflection on the way in. 2-1. Borough then woke from their slumber to exert a bit more pressure which resulted in a good run down the right from Abreu and a low cross into the area which was met by Vincent who's shot was saved by the keeper but the rebound fell to Ison who's shot was blocked on the line by a defender. However Borough restored the two-goal lead a minute later when a lovely ball in from the left was met by Ison who steered his header into the corner of the net. 3-1. Before the break Craig Shanley nearly increased the lead with a free kick from the left was pushed away by the Okeford keeper. Half Time 3-1. The second half continued with Borough in the driving seat and on 49 mins another Abreu run down the right brought a low cross back to Ison who cracked a stunning first time right foot shot into the far corner. 4-1. On 53 mins a ball in from the left by Vincent was headed goalwards only to be tipped away by the keeper. Okeford then managed a break away down the left, and the forward cut inside but saw his shot well smothered by Doug Shear. Borough than immediately came close when a long ball forward was chased by Abreu who's resulting shot was tipped round the post by their keeper. A further chance fell to Abreu who headed wide from a corner but Okeford had another shot from a tight angle on the left which was well saved by Shear and the Borough keeper made another good stop on 79 mins. On 86 mins a run down the left and a great cross into the middle by Pete Arkless, on for Ison, was wonderfully brought down by Abreu at the far post a then flicked past the advancing keeper. 5-1. With the game almost over, Duncan Stewart, on for Vincent, threaded a ball into the penalty area, which was again taken on by Abreu whose chip over the keeper was thumped in from close range by Arkless. 6-1. Borough: Shear, Allen, Orchard, Pearce (Elliott), Karl Griffin, Vincent (Stewart), Shanley, Farley, Constable , Abreu , Ison (Arkless). |
