Sherborne Town (0) 1, Poole Borough (2) 4. Dorset Premier League Cup Saturday 22nd January 2005 Borough
Scorers: David Perry 12, 69; Jamie Holland 26,
54. Borough cruised into the semi-finals of the Dorset Premier League Cup for the first time after a convincing victory at Sherborne Town with strike partnership David Perry and Jamie Holland both picking up a brace. The pitch rightly passed inspection by the referee but provided both sides with a difficult surface, which became more slippery as the game progressed. Two minutes into the game, Jamie Holland called for a penalty after going to ground under a challenge just inside the area, but the referee waved away his appeals. Sherborne came close minutes later when a dangerous cross was drilled in from the right, but Dan Herrington cleared in front of goal with a diving header. At the other end Herrington crossed from the left and Perry rose above his marker but his thumping header went agonisingly wide. Borough took the lead on 12 minutes with a bizarre goal as home keeper Ashley Knibbs came out to intercept a through ball with Perry bearing down, but the clearance deflected off of the Borough striker and rebounded into the empty net. A minute later Sherborne nearly equalised with a low shot from the left, but Adam Nash dived full length to deflect the shot and the Borough defence was backing up to clear. On 24 minutes Herrington again found space down the left and his centre picked out Alex Gunn, but the resulting shot went the wrong side of the upright. Within a minute Perry got to the by-line and pulled the ball back to Holland central to goal, but his shot was well saved by the home keeper. The pressure paid off for Borough on 26 minutes when a move involving eight first time passes found Holland on the left hand edge of the area and Borough's top scorer swivelled to unleash a stunning strike into the top right hand corner of the net. Before the break Adam Nash made two fine saves to maintain the advantage, firstly after a home forward latched onto a weak clearance from the Borough keeper, but he was out quickly to recover the ball at the striker's feet and following another Sherborne break-through Nash blocked the resulting strike with his legs. Half Time 0-2 Sherborne continued to press after the restart but were frustrated by a solid Borough defence, and the home sides task was made even more difficult after the Hornets scored their third on 54 minutes when a low free kick into the 6-yard box resulted in a scramble in front of goal and Holland got a toe to the loose ball to steer it over the line. Perry deserved to further increase the lead with a superb run on 62 minutes, picking up a through ball on the half-way line before slipping away from two defenders on his run into the area but his final shot was well blocked by Knibbs. However two minutes later Sherborne gave themselves a lifeline, pulling a goal back with a Richard Parkinson header from a free kick taken wide on the left. With 20 minutes remaining any hopes of recovery by the home side was thwarted as Herrington drove in a free kick from wide on the right and although the home keeper got across to divert the ball onto the crossbar, Perry was on hand to pounce on the rebound and bundle the ball home. Sherborne continued to push forward looking for a way back and saw a low cross from the right allude both strikers and defence as it angled across the area, but the home side's forays gave Borough the chance to strike back and the Knibbs made two further fine stops to deny Perry before full time. Borough: Adam Nash, Dan Cockwell, Tony White, Andy Barham, Sean Hebdon, Dan Herrington, Alex Gunn, Jamie Holland (Shaun Clarke 82), David Perry, Andy Coles, Matt Morris. Unused Subs: Danny Chapple, Danny Moore. The Verdict .................. Winning boss Tony White said: "It was a great performance. Sherborne are always a well-organised side so to score four times was very pleasing. Jamie Holland's first goal was absolutely brilliant and it is that type of football that I have been searching for. We are having a great season at the moment and I hope it will continue" "I never expected us to be where we are in the league at the moment and to get into the semi-finals of the cup is superb, but it is the players who deserve all the credit for their hard work and commitment." Sherborne boss Martyn Starnes said: "Six weeks without competitive matches is a long time and it showed. We were a bit rusty but they are a good side with good players. Their second goal was excellent but we conceded three horrible goals on a horrible day, on a horrible pitch and it was a horrible result." |
