Sturminster Newton United (0)
0, Poole Borough (0) 1. Dorset Premier League Cup - Semi final Saturday 2nd April 2005 Borough
Scorer: David Perry 79. Borough progressed to their first Dorset Premier League Cup final after a 1-0 victory at Sturminster Newton the goal coming ten minutes from time, courtesy of teenage striker David Perry, his 20th of the season for the Hornets. With both sides slow to get into their stride on a bumpy pitch few chances were created the early exchanges and Borough were restricted to long range efforts from Jamie Holland and Matt Bircumshaw. However on 31 minutes Dan Cockwell came close for the Hornets stealing in at the near post to get his head to a Tony White corner but the ball went narrowly wide. Two minutes later a Sturminster forward was played into space behind the visiting defence but Borough keeper Adam Nash was out quickly to block the resulting shot and then claim the ball at the second attempt. Three minutes from the break, Borough were awarded a free-kick wide on the left near the half way line and Andy Barham picked out Tony White in the box but his header hit the top of the cross bar. A minute later White again got his head to a free kick this time finding Sean Hebdon on penalty spot who drove the ball towards Perry in the 6 yard box and the resulting shot on the turn was deflected wide by a home defender. HT 0-0 Borough had a let off early in the second half when a low Stur cross into the area alluded both strikers and defence before rolling to safety. On 56 minutes Matty Parkin carved out a chance, breaking down the right wing and his centre picked out Holland who skillfully chested the ball down before shooting just the wrong side of the upright. The Borough defence worked hard to contain Stur as the home side looked to pump the ball forward to their strikers, however from a break away on 73 minutes Perry made a strong run down the left and got to the by line before looking to pull the ball back to the unmarked Alex Gunn in front of goal, but the home keeper did well to cut out the cross. The breakthrough came for Borough on 79 minutes after Holland was scythed down on the right hand edge of the area by Stur player-manager Neil Coates and White floated the resulting free kick towards the far post where Perry arrived unmarked to head home, although with the ball coming back out off the stanchion it took confirmation from the linesman before the goal was given. Stur pushed forward looking for a way back and on 89 minutes were awarded a free kick just outside the area which was struck low towards the near post and Nash did well to get across and scramble the ball clear. With the referee playing eight minutes of stoppage time there was still time for Stur to take the tie to extra time but the Borough defence stood firm and the Hornets nearly killed the game off when Gary Fooks collected the ball on the half way line and surged forward outpacing the home defence but his shot from 20 yards out struck the post. Borough: Adam Nash, Matty Parkin, Tony White, Gary Fooks (Mark Vincent 90), Sean Hebdon, Dan Herrington, Dan Cockwell (Alex Gunn 55), Jamie Holland (Ben Truan 79), David Perry, Andy Barham, Matt Bircumshaw.
