Stourpaine (0) 0, Poole Borough (1) 7. Dorset Premier League Sarturday 9th October 2004 Borough Scorers: David Perry 22, 57; Gary Fooks 51, 84, 90 (pen); Ben Truan 60; Derrant Blenman 76. Borough extended their unbeaten run to six games after an emphatic victory against a Stourpaine side who have yet to claim a point this season, and another clean sheet means the Hornets have now played nearly 10 hours of football without conceding a goal. The home side's record did not appear to weigh heavily on them as they matched Borough in the early exchanges, but the Hornets took the lead on 22 minutes after both Alex Gunn and Andy Barham saw shots blocked by defenders in the area before the ball was finally cleared, but only as far as David Perry who converted with a low drive. Immediately after the restart Matt Bircumshaw came close to increasing the lead, but Sam Turner in the home goal did well to block the shot, but Stourpaine had a chance to equalise minutes later when a home forward got behind the Borough back line, but shot over. Most of the action however was in the Stourpaine half and Dan Moore made a great run to get to the by-line before turning the ball back to Bircumshaw who just failed to get a clean connection, while Perry finished a strong run with a shot from the edge of the area which was parried by Turner but Bircumshaw put the rebound narrowly wide. Borough, however could not relax at the back and Tony White was forced to make a last ditch tackle to deny a home forward. However just before the break Turner was again called upon to stop a Perry shot following a low right wing cross from Matty Parkin. Half Time 0-1. From the restart the game was effectively one way, with Adam Nash a spectator to most of the half, and inside the first minute Barham nearly increased the lead for Borough, but Turner made another fine save to block his shot at point blank range. On 51 minutes however the home defence was finally breached for the second time as Borough were awarded a free-kick wide on the left, just outside the area, and from an almost impossible angle Gary Fooks placed the kick just inside the far post. On 56 minutes Alex Gunn was unfortunate to see a well struck shot from outside the area cannon off the bar, but a minute later Borough collected their third as Sean Hebdon who had pushed up following a corner, headed down a Parkin cross into the path of Perry who swept the ball home. With the game safe, Borough switched their forward line with Ben Truan and Derrant Blenman replacing Parkin and Gunn and within a minute of coming on, Truan scored the fourth, converting a right wing cross from Parkin with a diving header at the far post, which Turner got a hand to but could not keep out. Blenman was also in the thick of the action and a strong run from the centre circle saw him shake off two tackles before his final shot hit the upright, and he was later denied by Turner after connecting to a left wing cross from Herrington. However Blenman was not to be denied and he finally beat Turner on 76 minutes with a shot from 20 yards out which beat the keeper at his near post. Into the last 10 minutes a good flick on from Blenman sent Truan through but Turner again managed to get his hands to the initial shot and Truan put the rebound over the bar. Blenman was again provider on 84 minutes knocking a through ball into the path of Fooks who ran into the area before unleashing a low shot into the bottom right hand corner of the net. On the stroke of full time another run into area by Fooks saw him upended and he claimed the penalty himself, duly burying the kick to claim his first Borough hat-trick. Borough: Adam Nash, Matty Parkin, Tony White, Gary Fooks, Sean Hebdon, Danny Herrington, Alex Gunn (Derrant Blenman 56), Andy Barham, Danny Moore, David Perry (Ben Truan 56), Matt Bircumshaw (Dan Cockwell 68). Managers Comments .............................. Winning boss Tony White said: "They are not the best to be fair. They are keen but lack quality. Saying that, it was only 1-0 at half-time but we were totally in possession and once we got the second the floodgates opened. We have now kept six clean-sheets in a row which is a club record." Stour Manager Dave Piper said: "The first half performance was very good and it was probably the best we have played this season. But once they got their second our heads went down a bit and in the end they deserved their win. We have got to get a lot stronger and I think we a lacking a bit of experience. We lost a lot of players in the summer and it was never going to be a quick fix so we will keep going." |
