Wareham Rangers (0) 3, Poole Borough (2) 4. Dorset Premier League Saturday 30th April 2005 Borough
Scorers: Sean Hebdon 34, David Perry 45, Jamie
Holland 56, 70. Borough secured the three points required to take runners-up position in the Dorset Premier League, however despite twice being two goals down, Rangers refused to lie down and kept the Hornets fans on tenterhooks before they were finally able to secure victory. The opening exchanges were even, but Rangers created the best effort with a curling free kick, which Stuart Amey did well to steer past the post. As the half progressed Borough began to take control and Alex Gunn shot over from a corner, while a sharp exchange of passes with Gunn saw Jamie Holland break through on the right, but his shot went the wrong side of the near post. On 29 minutes Holland again got behind the home defence but his shot was blocked by the Wareham keeper at his left hand post and three minutes later Holland whipped on a cross from the right which the gloveman punched away with David Perry bearing down. The home keeper again denied Holland on 32 minutes after the Borough striker got onto the end of a deep cross from Tony White but a minutes later the Hornets took the lead when captain Sean Hebdon rose unchallenged to head home a White corner and register his 6th goal of the season. With Borough in command Holland again came close as he hammered a low cross from the right by Perry just wide of the far upright but they finally doubled their lead just before half time as Dan Herrington sent over a high cross from the left which a defender failed to cut out and the ball fell to Perry unmarked to pick his spot from 10 yards out. HT 0-2 Within two minutes of the restart however Wareham had pulled a goal back as James Heckford broke through the Borough defence to convert past a stranded Amey. And Rangers completed a dramatic come back five minutes later after a strong run down the left wing was capped with a fierce cross and Heckford arrived in the box to slam the ball home. It was Borough top scorer Jamie Holland who steadied his side on 56 minutes with a superbly taken goal, dispatching a high cross into the area from Matt Morris on the volley. Almost immediately Wareham came within inches of drawing level again as a cross from the right was headed narrowly wide, but Borough also went close as a Perry header from a White corner just cleared the bar and minutes later a White free kick from the left was flicked on by Holland but Hebdon at the far post was unable to get a touch to the ball to steer it home. With Borough pressing hard down the slope Gary Fooks forced a great save from the home keeper on 69 minutes as he tipped a long range shot over the bar. And the Hornets deservedly increased the lead a minute later after a battling run down the right from Perry took him to the by-line before he sent a low cross into the box where Holland was on hand to control the ball before steering his shot home. Wareham were still dangerous on the counter attack and Heckford broke through on the right and sent a low cross past the advancing Amey but no one was on hand to finish. At the other end Holland forced the home keeper to back peddle with a cheeky lob but the ball dropped just wide. However with two minutes remaining Amey was forced to come out smartly to defend another break through but the ball ricocheted badly for him leaving a home striker to sweep home the rebound and leave Borough to hang on to their narrow lead before securing the highest finish in the clubs short history.
